This calligraphy workshop focuses on creating text related to the surrounding hot spring region of Beppu. Participants can learn how to write words such as '温泉' - 'onsen' (meaning 'hot spring') and '地獄' - 'jigoku' (meaning 'hell'), under the guidance of a friendly local instructor. As well as being able to take your one-of-a-kind masterpiece home with you, this is also a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the charm of traditional Japanese culture, learning not only technique but also Japanese calligraphy etiquette.

Experience the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy. In this class, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to form stylish Japanese characters related to the local area, including the words for ‘hot spring’ and ‘hell’ - using only traditional paint brushes and paper. Able to take your creations home with you afterwards, you'll enjoy a relaxed, beginner-friendly atmosphere under the guidance of an experienced local instructor*. *Please note that although a Japanese national and highly experienced, the instructor is not a professional calligrapher. Yesterday i did a workshop Calligraphy and i enjoyed it very much. The teacher Kei was nice and give good instructions en inspirations. I made several Calligraphy papers for example one with my name. I can surely recommend this workshop, it was a lot of fun.

This has been one of our favourite activities ever. Rico was an excellent calligraphy teacher. We learned not only how to write various strokes & words but also the history of writing characters. The Space is a wonderful century old house where many community activities occur.

Absolutely fantastic! Learned the language and Liko was wonderful. It was a nice art. Class was great. Took her time and there was no time limit if we wanted to do four more pieces we could’ve.

This was so much fun. Rico was a very patient teacher. Knowledgeable about the history of calligraphy but not boring. We had lots of laughs creating our own special words. You must do this

The Calligraphy lesson exceeded any expectations we had. Our hostess was so graceful and welcomed us, although we were an unacceptable 30 minutes late. In addition to writing numerous words, we also learnt of their history and meaning. The definite highlight of our trip so far.

We arrived in the a.m. in Beppu and wanted a neat more laid back cultural experience for the afternoon. This is a terrific way to spend time after a long morning of travel. Hana, our instructor was just a joy and very patient with us. We were able to not only learn about the art of calligraphy but also discuss some of the cultural gems and practices of Beppu with Masa, the owner. All in all, it was great family time with a lot of laughs! One of our best immersive experiences on the island of Kyushu.

We where a party of four and did the Calligraphy, Tea Ceremony and Bamboo lamp making classes. All three classes were fantastic! The staff were friendly and helpful and gave excellent instructions. Would highly recommend all three classes

I had an amazing experience here. The staff was so nice and helpful and I had many lovely talks with them. They were also really patient and let me have multiple tries with my calligraphy. I felt very welcome and would definitely recommend this place if you want to learn more about Japanese culture and get in touch with locals.
