Calligraphy is not only an art form and a symbol of Japanese culture, but also a form of meditation.

Guided by a professional calligraphy instructor, you’ll use handmade brushes from Kumano, Hiroshima — Japan’s top brush-making town — and enjoy a calm, creative moment to express yourself.

Write your own calligraphy on a fan or shikishi and take home a unique souvenir.

The workshop is held at “Takumi,” a 50-year-old folk craft shop.

One wall is beautifully decorated with ukiyo-e prints, creating an artistic atmosphere.

“Takumi” is also known as Hiroshima’s leading craft shop, offering traditional items from across Japan.

• 5 min walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome

• 3 min walk from Hiroden Hondori Station

• 5th floor of Sanmall Mall (UNIQLO on 2nd floor)

Ryosei is a wonderful calligraphy artist and instructor. He provided lots of support and instruction on the brush strokes. The class felt fun and relaxed. This a fantastic activity to do to lighten your spirit. I’d highly recommend it!

Sensei Ryosei taught us the foundational brush strokes of traditional Japanese calligraphy. After a reasonable amount of practice we were let loose to create our selected kanji, in my case Wa, on a card (I choose yellow). My effort was a reasonable start but I will certainly need a lot more practice! Navigation hint: Find Ryosei on 5-F in the Sunmall.

I thought this was well worth it. I got to learn a little about Japanese calligraphy and the technique behind writing it. The instructor, Ryosei, was incredibly kind and helpful as well!
