Our two guides - Hamza and Hamdu - did everything they could to make us feel comfortable and safe. It was a lot of driving, but well worth the trip. Be prepared for a bumpy road, but with a skilled and safe driver. In total we were out for more than 12 hours, so plan your day accordingly!

Hamza and Hamdu were incredible. They were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and very accommodating. We were in excellent hands in each leg of what was a very long day of exploration. I couldn't have asked for better guides and friends.

The sites visited were really nice - especially Kakum national park. The walk above the rain forest is really beautiful. Also Elmina Castle is a good visit. Unfortunately we felt that the drive was much too long, unpleasant and very dangerous. We drove for 9-10 hours and we even decided to skip the last stop - the Cape Coast visit. Our guide was also our driver and we had to tell him several times to slow down. He made a lot of risky overtakes, and at one point he was millimeters away from hitting a minibus that was trying to overtake us. Also, the speed meant that we hit a lot of potholes at too high speed. There is a major road construction along the way and it will be like this for years to come. This means one hour in each direction with a very bumpy dirt road. The description of the tour mentions a lunch on the beach - this wasn’t part of the tour. We had lunch at Elmina Castle and it was not included. We didn’t feel that our guide was very knowledgeable either. We booked this tour based on the many positive reviews here. We were surprised that we had such a different experience.

Daniel and Alcina were very nice and took me to the park, Elmina, and Cape Coast Castles. They also shared with me about their lives which was very nice. Daniel handled many hours of tough driving and I'm very grateful.

Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Accra and Ghana as a whole. Their incredible historical knowledge made our conservations very informative and enjoyable. We really enjoyed learning from them. They helped us conquer our fear of heights at Kakum National Park. They also helped us to capture each moment on camera, therefore allowing us to take home tons of memories.

Built by the Portuguese in 1482, Elmina is the oldest European castle in sub-Saharan Africa, and was one of the main shipping points for enslaved Africans toward the Americas during centuries of transatlantic slave trade. As you walk through its stone corridors, through the dark and muggy dungeons where thousands of people were imprisoned, you still feel the echoes of pain, resistance and dignity of those who passed there. The “Gate of No Return,” through which the captives were taken to the Negro ships, is especially striking — a brutal symbol of separation but also of collective memory.

Despite the 6am departure time, the roads were full of life! My daughter and I were forewarned of the length of the drive and a segment of bumpy roads but that was simply a part of the authentic Ghanaian road trip experience. Kwame had to leave us before reaching Kakum due to the funeral services of a family friend, but he left us in the capacity hands of Daniel and Hansa. It took us over four hours to each Kakum, but it was worth it! The guided hike up was moderately strenuous, but you were greeted with forest speak and an amazing view at the top. The guide was knowledgeable, engaged, and emphasized protocols in place to ensure the safety of the bridge. Walking suspended over the rain forest floor was breathtaking! On to Elmina... Once you passed the persistent street vendors, you step into a vast complex holding within its bricks history and horror. Again, the tour guide was knowledgeable, engaged and respectful. Lunch onsite was tasty. I opted for the Ghanaian dish of red red and plantains (Amazing!). My daughter has pizza. Our final stop was the Cape Coast Castle and the Door of No Return. Once again, the guide was engaging and knowledgeable. Thanks to Daniel and Hansa for taking care of us the entire day, getting us back to the hotel safely, sharing your world perspectives, your music, hospitality, and enthusiasm for your country!

Highly recommend this day trip to the Cape Coast. The drive is long, but the canopy walk in the Kakum National Park is an exhilarating chance to see the rainforest from tree-eye level. The castles of the Cape Coast are an education, stark testaments to a terrible history. Don’t miss the opportunity to get to know the guides and talk with them not just about the sights but about language, food (I chatted with them about Accra night markets, Arctic exploration, and music management). They are fun and friendly hosts to this wonderful country.

I booked a tour to Cape Coast and Elmina Castle, along with Kakum National Park, and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The history and culture at the castles were powerful and moving, and the canopy walk at Kakum was breathtaking. What really made the trip stand out was our personal driver. Gershon was professional, friendly, and incredibly accommodating throughout the day. He made the journey comfortable, safe, and enjoyable, which allowed us to relax and fully take in the experience. Overall, it was a fantastic tour that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Ghana!
