5.00I’ve done game drives before, but nothing compares to seeing wildlife from horseback. The pace is slower, quieter, and you feel more connected to the environment. Our guide at Aquila knew the land well and kept us on safe trails while still getting us close to giraffe, kudu, and wildebeest. The horses were well cared for and responsive, even for nervous riders in our group. After the ride, we had time to freshen up before the vehicle safari, where we saw lion and rhino. The contrast between the two experiences was great – horseback for intimacy, 4x4 for distance and safety with predators. The day was long, about 10 hours from pickup to drop-off, but it never felt dragged out.

5.00I was nervous about riding in the bush, but the team at Aquila made it feel safe from start to finish. They matched horses to experience level, gave a proper safety talk, and had two guides with us at all times. The ride lasted about 1.5 hours and covered open plains and light bush. We saw a lot of plains game, and the silence of moving on horseback made it feel more natural. Afterward, we joined the standard game drive for predators. Spotting a pride of lions from the 4x4 was incredible. The whole day was well paced with breaks for water and photos. Pickup from Cape Town was early, but the drive out is scenic, so it didn’t feel wasted.
More than safari , it’s an amazing experience.

5.00This wasn’t just ticking off the Big 5 – it was about how you see them. Horseback riding gave me a sense of being part of the landscape rather than just observing it from a vehicle. The horses were calm even when we got close to zebra and giraffe, and the guides were excellent at reading the animals’ behavior. We didn’t see elephant or leopard on horseback, but that’s expected and why the afternoon drive is included. The lodge has a pool and restaurant with views over a waterhole, so there’s downtime between activities. If you’re comfortable around horses, even at a basic level, this is worth doing. It’s one of the most memorable days I had in South Africa.
