Founded in 1865 by the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana Free and Accepted Masons, the Masonic Cemetery expresses a character distinct from the Catholic cemeteries that dominate the city. It is known for its many unusual, elaborate tombs, a reputation due in part to the cemetery’s communal nature: members of lodges pooled resources to purchase large group tombs. Occupying two oddly shaped city blocks, the cemetery is triangular in plan, with Conti Street bisecting it. The triangular footprint of the bordering streets overlaid with the cemetery’s angular internal walkways mimics the Masonic emblem of the square and compass. Cast-iron picket fences enclose its two distinct sections, while oak allées line its northern and western edges. Tombs are compactly arranged in rows parallel to Bienville Street, with a wide, paved promenade cutting through the center to provide access to smaller walkways between rows.

Kendall was such an amazing tour guide he made it all feel so authentic and fun! We got great historical information from him but also at the cemetery and under the hanging tree the stories, photos and use of ghost hunting equipment creeped me out and I did not sleep well that night 😅😅

This was a great experience and our tour guide did a great job. He (wish I could remember his name) shared his own personal experiences which brought the tour to life. His knowledge made the tour great as well as his passion for what he does.

Don’t bother with this tour —- not only is it a waste of money but your time. You are picked up in a sketchy area of town and taken on a bus to the first cemetery which was ok. Then to a place to purchase food and go to bathroom (after 1/2 hour) which was fine. But then we were taken to a mausoleum to explore for 1/2 hour (of what???). Then you are dropped back off late at night to the same empty sketchy area. Better to go to St. Louis cemetery #1 tour where famous people are buried. (Which we are upset we didn’t do instead.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining! We did the late night 11 PM cemetery tour and it did not disappoint. The stories were fascinating to hear and the tombs were so beautiful yet spooky as well. Would definitely recommend this tour!

We met at a location that was difficult to get to due to construction all around. The driver started out with a little humor but faded as we went on. We visited a Masonic cemetery and there was little or nothing to see. The guide claimed to have exclusive rights to enter but there was another tour there as we arrived. The guide pointed out a few sort of notable graves including one about bugs being there since it was “fresh”. Yew. We wound up being self guided for the most part. Then left and went to a food/drink/bathroom break stop The highlight of the tour. We left and went across the city to an open working Cemetery that anyone had access to. This was another self guided “tour” (used loosely). After walking around and seeing a cat (another highlight) we left and returned to the starting point without going to the Katrina memorial as described. I’d like my money back but that won’t happen so I’ll hopefully be saving you some. Don’t do this one. As a side note. We ordered a cup of coffee with cream and was told it would be $3.85 when the guy brought the drink I gave him a twenty and he handed me back $12. I said it wasn’t right and he said yes the coffee is $7 and change. Then he explained it was a large and kept the change. GEZZ.

If you are looking for a ghost and cemetery tour where you hear about ghost stories and local history, this is NOT the tour you want. The tour started very disorganized, it started by having to returning to the pickup location to pick up people who arrived late. When we were finally on our way the driver didn’t share any information I steed he turned on loud hip hop music and the bus became a loud party bus. When we got to the Masonic Cemetery we realized it is a new cemetery. The driver did spend a few minutes telling us about cemetery facts and pointed out 2 specific graves until he told us all to look around on your own. We were there fir 10-15 minutes. The next place we stopped was a bar to use the bathroom and get drinks.. we spent more time at the bar than at the cemetery. Them we went to a big tree in the dark at a city park where the driver told a story and we left to drive back to the drop off location while listening to loud music and the dinging of the passengers. I would not recommend this unless you are looking for a BYOB party bus.
