We really enjoyed the trek today with Ekachai our guide. We were dropped off some way down from the temple, and walked up a fairly steep hill through the woods. There were only two of us along with Ekachai and so we could go at our own pace. He provided information about the plants and birds, as well as giving us history of the location, cultural information and also Buddhism. From the temple we drove to a small village to have lunch, making our way up to a coffee shop and an interesting viewpoint. From there we then went to another part of the trek to do another few kilometres walk that incorporated two other viewpoints with amazing lookouts across the ridge. Ekachai was flexible in relation to our needs, for instance at one point, one of us felt quite tired and so we drove to the next section of the track to pick it up there, instead of walking up a steep incline. We didn’t feel rushed at any point and felt he was very generous with his time.

We were looking for a trek but didn’t want to spend too long in a vehicle getting to the destination. This trek proved to be perfect. We were first driven to Wat Prathat, probably one of the more impressive temples in the area, and there were a good number of steps to ‘trek’ up to get to the temple. We started the trek from there. For most of it, we felt like we had the forest to ourselves. Ekachai was an excellent guide, pointing out the flora and fauna of interest. There was an element of adventure, crossing streams using stepping stones and narrow branches, with some ducking under, and climbing over, recently fallen trees. It was a bit muddy/wet in places but a decent pair of running shoes is good enough (walking shoes/boots would be better). Any earlier in the dry season than mid-November and it may be too wet/muddy. The path to the summit was closed for restoration until December 2025 but we ended at a hillside town and the simple restaurant had decent food and a great view. I suspect Ekachai uses various routes to get to the restaurant. We were then driven back to Ekachai’s car and were back at our hotel before 3.00pm. This tour was just what we were looking for (as an active couple in our mid-50s) and we really enjoyed it.

Fantastic tour through the jungle with very eager and skillful guide. Longer and somewhat more demanding than what came out in the description, but we had a very nice ride of 17 km and with a rise of 1100 height meters. Bring extra/dry clothes and socks and plenty of water!
