Borgo Storico di Manarola
Built in the valley of the torrente Groppo, until 1950 the stream which runs through the town was completely uncovered and 11 stone bridges allowed the people to cross from one side to the other. Over the next thirty years the stream was gradually covered over. The ancient village was destroyed by Saracen pirates (in 849) and the surviving people fled in land to live. When the seas were made safe again in the 11th century, people came back to settle here under the protection of the Republic of Genova. By the 1200's cultivation of vines was not only established but the wine they produced was sought after. The church of San Lorenzo was begun in 1338. The patron saint is celebrated on the 10th of August with a procession through the streets carrying a statue of him. The castle which protected the town from pirates is now a private home, you can see the garden from the panoramic walk, it is on the rock immediately above the port. Manarola is now famous for its Christmas nativity scene which is the biggest in the world. Figures outlined in thousands of lights cover the hillside. Also an Easter scene is made.

It was a very busy and full day with activities. We had 3 lovely ladies as our guides for the day. All 3 of them tried to be as mush of help as possible, provided with useful information about Cinque Terre and Tuscany in general. If you are choosing the hiking option: Bring comfy clothes, durable shoes and plenty of water for the hike.

It is a great day trip. Be prepared to start early. The day is full, and you have the opportunity to make it what you want it to be. The guides were great, and they gave great suggestions and tips for each town.

Amazing day for the family! We had 3 teenagers, and the hike was our favorite part. It’s certainly not an easy hike- the terrain is uneven and the uphill portion can be steep. But the scenery is breathtaking. Even without the hike, the views in each town are stunning and the boat ride at the end was a beautiful way to wind down the tour.

This was a favorite day trip that we took on our time in Florence. The meet up was easy to find organized and on time. The guides: Chris , Elena and can’t remember 3rd name , but a young girl . All were very knowledgeable, kind, & helpful! We opted for the hike tour. We had to climb the 425 steps into the first town , this was a good test to see if your up for hike. You can change your mine to do or not do hike after tour starts , super flexible! Had time in each town to take pictures , quick shop and grab lunch/ snack. Hike had many views you wouldn’t see if didn’t do. We were also able to do the ferry to the last town and see from water viewpoint ( depends on weather) Buses were comfortable and air conditioned but no bathroom so go before board. This was an exceptional tour! 10/10
