Valle del Cochamo
Cochamo Valley is located in southern Chile, east of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas cities, the road is tarmac for most of the drive going across Ensenada town, and reaching the mouth of the Puelo Valley into the Estuary of Reloncavi. West of the Argentinean border and Bariloche, in the heart of the Patagonian Andes. The trails where originally opened by gauchos and local people travelling between the two countries when borders where not clear among Chile and Argentina. Also history and legends say that Buch Cassidy and Sundance kid used come this way to smuggle cattle to sell in Chile. This was an amazing day walk on the Cochamo Trail. Maria from Patagonia Trails was a superb guide who, as a local, had an incredible understanding of the both the natural and human history of this area. The old-growth temperate rainforest, stunning geological formations and the pristine Petrohué River were highlights for me. We also met some locals on horseback, wearing traditional outfits and using the trail for original purposes - those encounters were an extra bonus. The trail was quite technical for walking and you needed to wear appropriate shoes and concentrate throughout the day. We had good weather on the day but were well prepared with warm waterproof clothes in case the weather took a turn for the worse. Hiking with such an experienced guide really helps in these situations. This day was a great adventure that I will remember for many, many years to come.

A beautiful hike through the forest, not too strenuous but often muddy. Great, personalized service and the guide was very knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and history of the area. A memorable experience and highly recommended!
