In this class, you’ll learn how to prepare a traditional Japanese norimaki (sushi roll), one main side dish of your choice, a seasonal vegetable dish, and a comforting bowl of miso soup — all menus include these dishes. The norimaki can be substituted with an onigiri (rice ball) if you prefer. For the main side dish, please choose from: Teriyaki Chicken – tender chicken glazed in a sweet and savory soy-based sauce Saikyo Yaki – miso-marinated fish grilled for a rich, delicate flavor Gyoza – pan-fried dumplings filled with ground pork and vegetables We’ll begin by making dashi (Japanese soup stock) completely from scratch — a skill at the heart of Japanese home cooking and the secret to creating depth of flavor in everyday dishes. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth and balance of Japanese family meals while learning techniques you can easily recreate at home. A vegetarian option is available upon request.

Our host Aki was so patient and explained things very well to us, and it was brilliant to learn more about Japanese cooking. We had a lovely meal, and were treated with a nice tea and dessert as well. All round fabulous!

Aki was an amazing host. She opened her home to me for the cooking class where we prepared several dishes. The experience was both educational and enjoyable. Afterwards, she walked me to the grocery store and showed which ingredients we used and gifted me some snacks. Would 100% recommend this class!

My fiancé and I joined this class because he’s a huge fan of Japanese cuisine, and it turned out to be such a memorable experience for both of us. Aki is a fantastic instructor — she explains each step clearly, demonstrates the techniques first, and then gives you the confidence to try them yourself. She also had two wonderful assistants who were incredibly helpful. They asked the kinds of insightful questions we didn’t even realize we had, and they helped connect unfamiliar Japanese ingredients to similar ones we could easily find back home in the US, which will make recreating the dishes so much easier. Every dish we made was absolutely delicious, and I especially loved being able to customize the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce to taste. The whole class was fun, welcoming, and hands-on in the best way. The food was excellent, but the warm atmosphere and amazing instruction were what truly made it unforgettable. I can’t recommend this class highly enough.

Great environment for cooking. The 3 hour class for just my spouse and I, was exactly the way to spend the passing-by monsoon weather. Catering to learning with pictures and brief history of the food being prepared, with premium ingredients prepped beforehand. Aki was superb in teaching both the novice and experienced, how proper food is prepared in Japanese households. Providing a list of choices, then going off-book at one's request because of dietary restrictions and tastes, then providing suitable replacements was nothing short of amazing. Learning the art of how to make each ingredient more beautiful and presentable was worth the cost of the class, easy. Hope Aki is still teaching for a future trip! Easily a Five Star experience.

Aki was a delight to have as our instructor. She let us make a small adjustment to the meal (chicken instead of pork) without issue before the meeting and asked about allergies. After we arrived, she explained the steps we would take, and then guided us each step of the meal making process. Her English skills were also incredible and she answered all our questions. The rental cooking space was well stocked as well. The food was delicious and we were able to learn a lot about the Japanese flavors.

Learning to cook a homestyle meal that I can replicate at my home was a delightful experience with Aki. Aki explained and demonstrated everything very clearly and I am confident I will be able to recreate these tasty dishes! It really was like being with a friend in the kitchen! I was given choice over what I wanted to prepare and my taste foibles (I don’t like mushrooms!) were very graciously catered for! I highly recommend a cooking class with this lovely Tokyo mum!
