• Carriage driving in rural Silesia.

  With two friends, we enjoyed two days' introduction to carriage driving with Gary, followed by the five day tour of rural Silesia, staying in castles and palaces along the way. Bec and Gary were very welcoming and when we arrived we enjoyed meeting their lovely horses and other animals at the farm. Gary is a wonderful horseman (a champion carriage driver), a calm and very patient teacher. The first local drives were very enjoyable and it was thrilling to try driving, only possible with Gary on hand to grab the reins at any point! It is a beautiful and unspoilt area. We stayed the first three nights in two self-catering flats at the farm and had time to visit nearby Görlitz on the German side of the Lusatian Neisse River and Zgorzelec on the Polish side. We highly recommend visiting the Baroque House in Görlitz. On the tour each castle and palace had a different atmosphere. Medieval Czocha was imposing, at Palace Lenno we loved meeting Bernadette and Luk, Lomnica has been stunningly restored and Karpniki is outstanding. Throughout the tour we enjoyed delicious food, often beautifully presented. We stopped by a lovely lake for our picnic on the first day. Caring for the horses rightly came first at each stop and we enjoyed being able to help with grooming and harnessing up, but that is not obligatory. The drives along tracks, sometimes through forests, sometimes across open country were stunning and I enjoyed those the most on the tour. There were stretches on roads and sometimes the Polish drivers, even in lorries, don't slow down for the horses. However, other drivers were considerate and often people we passed seemed delighted at the sight of the horses and carriage. In addition to traffic, we passed barking dogs in gardens but the horses remained calm and steady. They were wonderful. We enjoyed being able to walk alongside the carriage at some points, especially to lighten the load for the horses when going uphill. Being a party of four was very good. Gary can accommodate larger parties with two carriages. Having done the introductory weekend we felt at the end of the week that a four day tour would have been enough, particularly because Karpniki is such an amazing place to stay. The last night at Palac Wojanow was fine but it felt more corporate. Also, on the Friday our tour was a circular route rather than a journey from A to B, in that sense I found it less satisfying. In retrospect, this was one of the most memorable and enjoyable of holidays. We were very lucky with the weather on our tour, we had just one afternoon of rain. Rain ponchos and umbrellas are provided by Gary. Being outdoors all the time, if the weather had been wet it wouldn't have been so pleasurable. There is so much history to learn in this part of the world and it all felt very untouristy. We would certainly like to return.   Just great...we had a wonderful carriage ride in great surroundings with coffee and homemade cakes in the host's garden. The reception was very warm and we were allowed to spend a great time with very warm people. Thank you so much. We will definitely book this again. LG Jörg, Sophie and Martina

  My husband and i did the 5 day "Castles by Carriage" tour in Silesia in 2025. It was such a wonderful time. Gary and his 2 beautiful carriage horses - Ronaldo & Blitz - carried us around 30 km each day through gorgeous countryside. The pace was perfect, there were no other tourists, we saw areas that few tourists see since we were deep in forests & woods on dirt tracks AND then at the end of each day we wined and dined in different and gorgeous castles & palaces. We picnicked most days in beautiful spots. Everything was included in the price & a week of not pulling out our wallets or having to make decisions was wonderful.   We were greeted very kindly by Rebecca and Garry. Both introduced us to their horses and before the start of the carriage ride we could pet them. The drive went almost two hours and the view was magnificent. Once back in the yard there was coffee, tea and delicious cake. They were cozy together and told a lot. We can only highly recommend the two and will gladly come back for a bigger tour!
