Explore the Danakil from the Afar capital Semera (590km from Addis Ababa) with the Ethiopian Airlines Daily flight. The Danakil is a genuine expedition destination. Although a good 350km road now runs from Semera to Mekele via Afdera, the tracks to Dallol and Do Dom (for Erta Ale) require 4×4 and navigational skills. The region is best visited with an experienced operator using a minimum of two 4x4s, and experienced staff who know the local Afar. Helicopter access is from Mekele. Currently, we offer tours directly out of Semera. The minimum time required for a full tour is two nights, spending one at Hamed Ela and one on the rim of Erta Ale. An extra night at Erta Ale is recommended if you want to see the crater by day, and another for Lake Afdera. Day1: Addis Ababa – Fly To Semera Drive To Afdera-Volcano This day we will meet you at the town of Semera airport then we will drive to Danakil depression. We start an early drive to Lake Afdera(a salt lake that is located in the heart of Danakil Depressions and in this lake you may a chance of the natural hot springs then later you had swimming around this lake we will be driving to Dodom (at the base of Erta Ale). Leave after lunch, possibly at 01:30. After you pass several small hamlets scattered here and there in this desert land, Dodom is about 9.5km from Erta Ale and it takes about 1 hrs trekking. Early dinner around 17:00, Camels transport all the camping materials and some food (sleeping materials like light mattresses and mat and water) to the rim of the volcano, where we spend the night watching the dramatic action of the boiling lava. Danakil depression (dallol and Erta Ale) ranks one of the most alluring and physically challenging natural attractions anywhere in Ethiopia.

Day 2 ErtaAle-HamadEla-Dallol-Afdera This day after an early breakfast we will drive to HamadEla at 04:30, a better village with a total population of about 500 people. You will see lots of camel caravans and you will have the sunset look from the very shallow salt Lake Assale.

5.00What a tour. The most amazing places and really get a feel for the local Afar people. The destination is amazing but the journey there and back is too. ETT was super well organized and responsive in coordinating things. I never felt at risk. Be ready for some rough driving and a tough experience but as Nike brand says- just do it .

5.00We booked 3 day tour to Danakil depression from Semera and it was really amazing! Tour was very well organized, whole team was great and the scenery is incredible! You have to go a little out of your comfort zone and that makes it even more special :) ... All the guys are helpfull, kind, reliable and really good company, all the best! They made our days very special and added something extra to the whole experience (special thanks to our guide Solomon and driver Awet)!
