The Rock-Hewn Churches

Your exploration of the 11 medieval rock-hewn churches, hidden crypts and tunnels carved into the red volcanic rock starts with the northwestern cluster of churches. The visit will include • Bet Medhane Alem (House of Holy Savior) • Bet Maryam (House of Mary) • Bet Meskel (House of the Cross) • Bet Dengil (House of Virgins) • Bet Mikael & Bet Golgotha (House of Michael and Golgotha) In the afternoon continue your tour with the churches of the southeastern cluster that include the most intricately carved exteriors of all the churches of Lalibela. • Bet Gabriel and Rufael (House of Gabriel and Raphael) • Bet Merkorios (House Mercurios) • Bet Amanuel (House of Emanuel) • Bet Abba Libanos (House of Father Libanos). The final stop and highlight of any tour will be the famous monolithic church of St George, curved in the shape of a cross.

Lalibela was one of the many highlights we visited while in Ethiopia. Fikru's knowledge of the history and of Lalibela today made for a very memorable tour. That he spoken english fluently made him a top guide for English speakers.

In July 2019, my wife and I spent a week in Lalibela. As a musician and my wife as a cultural scientist, we were particularly interested in getting to know the local people as well as the cultural history. We were lucky enough to meet Fikru as our tour guide. In addition to his extensive knowledge of the churches and religion, he proved to be a very approachable person and helped us to make contacts and get experiences that are hidden from normal tourism. He has a permanent place in our positive memories of Ethiopia, we had a great experience traveling with him and warmly recommend him to anyone who wants to get to know this amazing place.
