The Bogside Artists
We will visit "The Bogside" which is a majority Catholic/Irish republican area, and shares a border with the Protestant/Ulster loyalist enclave of the Fountain.The Bogside is a neighbourhood outside the city walls of Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The large gable-wall murals by the Bogside Artists, Free Derry Corner and the Gasyard Féile are popular tourist attractions. You will learn about The Battle of the Bogside which was a very large communal riot that took place from 12 to 14 August 1969 in Derry, Northern Ireland. The fighting was between residents of the Bogside area (organised under the Derry Citizens' Defence Association), and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) along with local unionists. The rioting erupted at the end of an Apprentice Boys parade which was passing along the city walls, past the Catholic Bogside. Fierce rioting broke out between local unionists and the police on one side and Catholics on the other. Rioting between police and Bogside residents continued for three days. The police were unable to enter the area and eventually the British Army was deployed to restore order. The riot, which sparked widespread violence elsewhere in Northern Ireland, is commonly seen as one of the first major confrontations in the conflict known as the Troubles.

5.00Barry made our day trip from Belfast to Derry a wonderful experience. He communicated before the trip and arrived early to pick us up. En route, he provided background information about what we were going to see and learn in Derry. The tour of Derry began with the Bloody Sunday Museum and included several important monuments and sights. We enjoyed lunch at the oldest pub in Derry and made a quick stop in Donegal to catch a beautiful view. Would definitely recommend this tour.

5.00Absolutely fantastic day with Barry, he was a wonderful, informative guide who catered for our family of all ages with excellent suggestions on the day and for other days in Belfast. He was really interesting and helpful, and a lovely guy. Would definitely recommend, we saw everything we wanted to and more, his driving was faultless, his knowledge limitless!

5.00This is the only way to experience Derry and to get a true perspective of the events that unfolded over centuries, the brutal oppression of Catholics and those who have only ever sought fairness, equality with others, hope for themselves and their families and a united Ireland. Barry’s passion and analysis was in abundance and he helped make this more than just a tourism experience - it was an awakening. I cannot recommend this experience more fulsomely if you want a no holds barred, authentic understanding of Derry. This is so much more than just walking in the footsteps of The Derry Girls (although we were proud to do that too!).

5.00This small group tour was a great experience with exceptional service. Paula, our tour guide, was knowledgeable, personable and fun to talk to and learn from. And an extremely competent driver especially when we hit fog. We really enjoyed spending the day with her, walking around, and were thoroughly engaged seeing points significant to Derry’s/Londonderry’s history. Would highly recommend taking this tour for an in depth and more personal experience!

5.00I was travelling by cruise ship, and since I had been to Belfast twice before, decided I wanted to visit Derry. Barry picked me up promptly at the ship, and we started our journey to Derry. We chatted about the troubles in Derrys past, and everything else. I walk with a cane and he was very attentive to my needs and restrictions. I felt i saw it all in 1 day. Went to a wonderful pub for lunch. Terrible traffic going back to ship, but Barry navigated it well, and we arrived in plenty of time. All in all a fantastic day.........thanks Barry.
