Slave Huts at White Pan

Step back in time and discover one of Bonaire’s most significant historic landmarks – the White Slave Huts. Located near the island’s shimmering salt pans, these small white houses were built in the 19th century to shelter enslaved people who worked in the salt industry. Though simple in appearance, they hold a powerful story about Bonaire’s past and the resilience of its people. During this excursion, your driver-guide will share insights into the lives of those who once lived and worked here, explaining the role of salt in Bonaire’s economy and culture. You’ll also see the surrounding salt flats, where enormous mountains of gleaming white salt and the striking pink waters create an unforgettable backdrop. This is more than just a photo stop – it’s a moment of reflection and learning. The White Slave Huts remind us of the hardships endured, but also of the strength and heritage that shaped Bonaire.

Our 2-hour tour began with Elgin picking us up at the cruise port with a sign so we knew we were going with the correct guide. He gave us tons of history about Bonaire, answered all questions we had, stopped along the route anywhere we wanted to stop to take pictures, and even backed up along the route so I could photograph some flamingos. His car was clean and his English was great! Elgin explained the process of making the salt and we made a quick stop to gather a piece of the salt as a souvenir & a freshly-sqeezed juice! I can't say enough about Elgin's professionalism and kindness. We felt safe with him the whole time and I would be 100% confident he would care for your party has he did for ours.
