Pasochoa
Our Adventure begins driving southeast of Quito to a region known as the Avenue of Volcanoes, here we will hike through a rich cloud forest. The reserve is named after the Pasochoa Volcano. During its last eruption a wide-open Caldera was left that today is home to many species of flora and fauna, of which we will learn about during this trek deep in the forest. After spending quality time learning and exploring we will have lunch and then go to the lodge. Accommodation: Llullullama Hostel or similar Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Chugchilan
After breakfast, we will start our day hiking on dirt trails and narrow secondary roads. Along the way we will have the pleasure of experiencing some of the most stunning and privileged views of the Andes in Ecuador, passing through villages like Isinlivi and Chugchilan. These towns are small and they depend on farming and cattle. They also produce quinoa, potatoes and corn, and they raise horses, mules, chickens and guinea pigs, a delicacy in Ecuador. Once we get to Toachi canyon we will have a picnic and then climb up to Chugchilan. Accommodation: Mama Hilda Hostel or similar Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Quilotoa
Today is one of the biggest challenges of the Expedition but also one of the most rewarding! After much effort, you will be met with 360 views at the top of the Quilotoa Volcano a turquoise jewel in the Andes. This volcano is sacred to the indigenous people not only its impressive power but also for being inspiration for the local artists in many of their works. After lunch we will drive to Riobamba where we stay overnight. Accommodation: Andaluza Hacienda or similar Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Mount Chimborazo
In the morning, we will enjoy a tasty breakfast and then drive to Chimborazo reserve. This place is home of thousands of vicuñas, small relatives of llamas that are easily identifiable by their red coats as they wander about the skirts of the volcano. Chimborazo’s summit is considered the highest on earth if measured from the planet’s core. This is due to its proximity to the Equator making it closer to space than Everest! Our hike will be short but challenging, as we will be reaching almost seventeen thousand feet. After lunch we will head to Baños, a perfect place to go out for drinks and salsa dancing. Accommodation: Alisamay Hotel or similar Meals included: Breakfast and lunch

Cascada El Pailon
Today we will head to the border of the lush Amazon Basin where we will hike through a beautiful forest to Pailon del Diablo. A powerful cascade, this waterfall forms a small gorge with an overhanging bridge to be able to experience its majesty not only alongside the falls but also from above. In the afternoon we will visit Casa del Arbol, famous for its swing overlooking the valley in Baños and the Tungurahua volcano. Many will recognize this place as it won the photo contest of NatGeo in 2014. There will also be time for optional activities like zipling or shopping. Cotopaxi National Park
Our seventh day of exploring takes us back north to Cotopaxi. Cotopaxi is one of the highest active Volcanoes on earth. Perfectly conical and surrounded by views of other volcanoes it is a sight to behold. The park is also home to horses and bulls, which can sometime be seen trotting about. Once reaching the National Park we will trek upwards to the base of the glacier, nearing 17,000 feet! In the afternoon we will return to Quito. I wanted to live a trekking adventure in the Ecuadorian Andes and found the Active Expedition option. I liked that they were accessible and could customize the tour to my time needs and activity level, and in this case I was traveling alone. The tour includes transportation, food (adaptable, in my case vegetarian), lodging (comfortable and safe) and the guide (from the area, he knows the route perfectly). It was definitely the right choice, I had an incredible time.

Every day was a new adventure. My husband and I are in our 60s and live at sea level, so even with three days in and around Quito to acclimate I was worried about the high altitudes. I credit our very experienced guide, Daniel, for the fact that we had little difficulty and really enjoyed every day.

I contacted Christian to organize a trip to the Quilotoa loop. He connected us to Victor from Sigchos who guided us on a 3 day trip from Sigchos to Isinlivi to Chugchilian and finally reaching Quiltoa with its beautiful emerald crater. Some people suggest that you can do the Quilotoa loop on your own without a guide. But, we would recommend a local guide. Victor, as a local to the area, took us on the most beautiful path through the valleys and countryside - a path we would not known how to do on our own. Victor was incredibly kind and explained many things along the way, such as the local herbs and vegetation we passed by. He was also always on time and his family helped to transport our luggage from hostel to hostel. We had an amazing time.

This trip was an amazing way to experience Ecuador! The landscapes and views in all of the treks were breathtaking and each place had its own unique charm. Our driver Jose was great; he navigated the roads like an expert and also prepared delicious lunches for us everyday that met the dietary needs of everyone in our group, while also making sure we tried all the different local fruits and foods that we don’t have in the United States. Our guide Daniel also did an excellent job. He was very personable and fun to talk to and also extremely knowledgeable about the different animals, plants and places we were seeing along the way everywhere we went. He did a very good job at making sure everyone was enjoying themselves and that we all got to do everything we wanted to. He made sure we saw all the highlights and also had local suggestions in towns like Baños that we wouldn’t have known to check out on our own during our free time. He always ensured that everyone was handling the altitude well on the hikes that got to higher altitudes like Chimborazo and Cotopaxi. He managed the different hiking skills and speeds of all the people in the group well. Our trip would not have been the same without him! All of the hotels we stayed at were nice and charming and all had great food. We had vegans and vegetarians in our group and they were always accommodated. The hotel in Baños is nice but it is far away from the town which took away from some of the time we could have spent there. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the mountains in Ecuador and has a sense of adventure! The hiking could be challenging at times but was always worth it and there were other activities offered as well such as zip lining, visiting waterfalls, adventure parks, bridge jumping, etc. I will absolutely recommend this tour to my friends and family and would book with them again next time I’m in Ecuador. Thank you for the unforgettable trip!

Great experience--exceeded my (already high) expectations! Christian (the owner), Daniel (our guide), and Jose (the driver) really have this trip dialed in. Well thought out, varied itinerary, with mountains, deep canyons, forests, and waterfalls. Very nice lodges with character. Great food. And excellent pre-trip communication. Felt sad when the trip came to an end. Will have to try their mountain-biking tour next year...

What a fantastic way to see the country! Daniel and Jose were absolutely incredible. Jose expertly got us from A to B, and was also an top notch chef. He was able to accommodate a vegan diet and not make it feel like I was missing out on experiencing the local cuisine. Daniel is a true wealth of knowledge, genuinely warm and friendly, so fun and personable and had a well thought out plan for each location that both hit the highlights and also showed us some hidden gems. He did an amazing job of striking a balance between being hands on during the day and also having some time for self guided exploring. He was very easy to talk to and really took to heart what we individually wished to gain from this journey. The trekking was a wonderful experience. It was really great to have a guide and gourmet food along the Quilota loop, especially as the trail was not always clearly marked. The opportunity to get to the elevations and views at Chimborazo and Cotopaxi was definitely a huge attraction and it did not disappoint. The accommodations along the way were cute and nice. I especially enjoyed the Llullu Llama eco-lodge in Isinlivi. It’s charm, views, and focus on making a smaller footprint on the environment was a brilliant way to spend the evening after a day of hiking. The company as a whole was so easy to work with. They were incredibly helpful and responsive which made the planning and logistics a breeze. I appreciated their willingness to setup airport transportation, the hotel in Quito, and even covid testing. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip or company to any friend!

Hands down one of the best guided treks and tours I have ever done. Jose, our driver and roadside chef, was fantastic. He not only navigated the roads like a champ, he was personable, helpful, and fun. Daniel, our guide, was a real gem. His knowledge base was amazing. At every turn he was educating us on history, plant species/ uses, local animals, traditions, etc. He gave us tips for managing the altitude, organized amazing activities for us, and made sure all our dietary restrictions were accommodated. All of the hotels we stayed in were comfortable and provided amazing breakfasts and dinners. The hotel for the Banos portion of the stay was charming, but it was 45 min away from the city. Staying in the city would be preferred as we were there for 2 nights. The trekking was challenging at times, but the views were always rewarding. The swing at the end of the world was beautiful, the hot springs were HOT, and the people along the way were always charming and friendly. One tip... keep any eye out for cow poo along the trails!

This 8 day hiking trip was amazing. We got to see some of the tallest mountains in South America. The trip was well organized and Christian, our guide, was amazing! The food was amazing and the accommodations were clean and spacious. It would have been very hard to plan this itinerary on my own and I am glad I made the most of this package. If you want to see some of the best views and have a trip that will always remember, this should definitely be in your bucket list. A complete package!

We hiked the Quilotoa Loop with Christian and I cannot say enough about the experience. He was a great guide. The days hiking were exhilarating, especially when you finally get the view of Crater lake. The food and nightly accommodations were all top notch. This trip got me hooked on adventure travel.

Hiking the Quilotoa Loop, playing soccer with the locals, running downhill to the Crater Lake (optional) and jumping into the water will be forever ingrained in my memory. Our guide, Christian, taught us about the volcanoes, crops, animals and culture of Ecuador with a hands on approach. His passion for travel, learning, fitness and fun was inspiring to be around. Jose took us to the different villages and welcomed us after each strenuous hike with a fantastic picnic and a smile. I’m still dreaming about his guac:). Our first full day, we trekked Cotopaxi, reaching 16,000 ft. Each hike presented different challenges and left us each breathless (literally and figuratively). ActivExpedition accommodates many different levels and our group encouraged each other to make each hike their own, while supporting one another. Several of us couldn’t get enough and extended our trip by a day to Mindo. We visited Pululahua, an Inca populated crater. Then we went rappelling down a waterfall, shopped, took a cable car through the forest, did a waterfall hike and touched the Equator line. The “Ecuador Trekking 8 days" well exceeded my expectations and I’m forever grateful for the experience!
