Drive across the Qara Mountains and on to the Nejd area of Dhofar. Dhofars most remarkable and popular site with its unspoilt and magical sand dunes. We recommend it highly among Salalah Tours and Oman Day Tours as a whole and you will take an unforgettable memory to share with your family and friends back home. We make a brief stop at Thumrait which was famous as a Bedouin settlement. We drive further to the daunting Empty Quarter or Rub Al Khali. Here we find high sand dunes that rise to a height of 250 metres and above. From here, we drive to the lost city of Ubar, According to myth, the desert swallowed up Ubar. Quite literally, it sank without trace -becoming the fabled Atlantis of the Sands. This once buried city, which was spotted by satellite, gives you a glimpse of the value of work carried out by a team of explorers in 1982, led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. On our return to Salalah we pass by Frankincense trees..this one of the highly recommended tour among Oman Desert tours.

A terrific experience. Sleeping in the desert is a magical memory that must necessarily be experienced in Oman. The ghost town is also impressive.

Probably a visit to the desert dunes is a once in a lifetime experience. See these places up close and touch the impalpable desert sand from a unique and indescribable feeling. The organization of the trip was discreet: the jeep ride in the desert was exciting but I think not everyone likes it, the visit to the archaeological site of the lost city really not significant, good dinner in the camel meat tent, but the accommodation in a tent just enough and the evening around the fire suggestive but a bit boring. Overall an experience to do anyway

A half day and a night in the desert. A unique and beautiful experience! Seeing sunset in desert changing colors and magical Eating under the marquee then telling stories around a fire with falling stars is priceless. Then sleep under a tent of many comforts and an unforgettable experience.

It is nice, but not worth the money - way too expensive for what you get. First of all it is a very long car drive to the desert, where you only spend like 30 minutes - also the dune bashing is not really fun, as it lasts for about 5 min and that is it. On the way back there is a stop at the lost city, which is not that spectacular. And then drive back to the hotel. Basically you pay a lot of money for a private driver - not really for things to experience. Would not recommend.

Do not follow the TomTom route but after Thumrait continue for about 40 km towards Muscat (31) then turn left on asphalt road until Ubar (about 60 km); quite overslept village with archaeological remains of once a beautiful fortress, reasonably (Italian) restored, info on signs and a film is shown. Then about an hour to red dunes. Only drive in with material and at least 2 cars!!

The excursion begins relaxed, you drive in desert you can admire black dromedaries and then drive to the empty quarter to the large sand dunes, which you climb by jeep... (a good stomach is needed :-) ) Once you are up, you have a truly beautiful view over the desert of Oman.

A birthday treat for my wife and what a treat it was. A great trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our driver/guide was incredibly knowledgeable and informative and had great driving skills as we drove over the dunes, stopped for pictures and visited Ubar and the frankincense valley. We had lunch at Mumtaz in Thumrait. A great meal and amazing value. We will be back again

Beautiful experience, you will be fascinated by seeing the immensity of the sand dunes, golden in color and their softness like talcum powder. The fourth empty is the second largest desert in the world and includes 4 states Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Arab emigrants. Legend has it that God creates Heaven, the sea, the earth and finally the fourth void.

I stayed at Salalah Rotana Resort and during the holiday I went hiking in the desert with overnight stay in a tent, magnificent experience of walking and tumbling on the fiery dunes from the setting sun, really good dinner at the tented camp with an excellent camel meat stew, magnificent view of the starry sky. Although in the middle of the desert comfort is not bad it takes a little spirit of adaptation, but it is worth it. Little significant view to the ruins of Ubar, few stones and nothing more, and the park of incense trees.

this is not on the way to anything really, but if you are headed up to the empty quarters and the sand dunes, then you should definitely stop at Ubar for a visit.
