The Actun Tunichil Mucnal Cave has been classified as one of the top ten sacred caves in the world. Getting there is an experience of its own. It entails a 35-minute hike under the canopy of the trees crossing the same river three times. The first crossing is approximately 5ft deep and the other two are under a foot deep. Upon arrival at the Entrance of the cave, equipment is checked and lights are turned on. It's 500 mts treading through water and going stalagtights, under stalagmites and through some cool formations.
The second part is going up some rocks to get up a ledge on a second level. The Sacred Chamber is where all the ceramic and human remains are found. Your guide shares information about the different ceremonial spaces within the cave until you get to the main highlight which is the Cristal Maiden. A full-body skeleton completely calcified to the ground, evidence of human sacrifices that were practised inside the cave.

The vehicle will make a quick stop at a small supermarket so you can buy snacks or water. This is also the start of the 30-minute Dirt bumpy road to the Parking Lot of the archaeological reserve. Along the drive through the valley towards the cave you will pass the village of Arizona and then some farm land - Corn plantations on the flat areas. As you get closer the cave, you start seeing some mounds that stand out from within the fields. We know now they are ancient Maya structures that have never been excavated. This is evidence that people lived in this area hundreds of years ago, cultivated corn and probably the ones that used the caves. Upon arrival to the parking lot, you will have time to change into proper clothing and put on the equipment provided - Helmet, Headlamp and Lifejacket.

Beautiful cave with untouched archaeological artifacts. The site is unique, very beautiful and we feel privileged to be able to walk in the footsteps of Mayan ancestors and witness this culture unveiled by archaeologists. Reyes was a great guide to accompany us inside and explain the history of the Maya , as well as the rituals and sacrifices practiced. Unfortunately photos are not possible but it is a must and the guide can always share some historical ones:) Highly recommended if you are visiting Belize!!

The tour was truly phantastic. The cave is breathtaking, beautiful stone formations and impressive artefacts, and also fun to get into the cave and out. Our guide Reyes did a great job in explaining Maya culture, the history of the cave and even the geology and botany of thos place. And we went in a small group which was nice. I fully recommend this tour / experience!!

The cave was truly amazing! I would say this is a must do for anyone who wants to learn maya culture, and wants to do ao in a more active way. Climbing and swimming through the caves was so much fun. And then when you actually get to the chamber with the artifacts, you'll be left speechless by how well preserved they are. You'll be face to face with history! Our guide Reyes absolutely took this experience to the next level! His knowledge about the site and the ancient history was amazing. He took us early into the caves, which was perfect since you go before the big groups. You'll almost have the place to yourselves. I would definitely recommend anyone to go! Thank you so much Reyes for giving this perfect experience!

This tour was above and beyond my expectations. The cave is beautiful and an adventure to explore. The Mayan cultural artifacts are very interesting and our guide Reyes told us so much fascinating Mayan history, it really gave a lot of meaning to what we were seeing. The meal supplied for lunch was great, and very accommodating to my dietary restrictions. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this tour. Everything about it was wonderful.

Our guide Reyes gave us an amazing amount of background information on the Maya, their culture, and their history, which helped us get so much more out of our ATM cave tour than we would have otherwise. I cannot recommend this tour with Reyes more highly.
