Funerals are special events in Ghana. The Ga people, particularly, are known for creating extraordinary fantasy coffins to celebrate funerals. They believe honouring the deceased properly ensures a joyful departure for the spirit and brings blessings to the family left behind.
The design of each coffin symbolizes something significant in the person's life. For example, a coffin shaped like a fish may be used for a fisherman, while one resembling a sewing machine might represent a sewist.
The experience concludes at the nearby Artist Alliance Gallery, which features over three floors of art, sculpture, carvings, and various artefacts, including museum-quality coffins on display.

Travel to an exotic coffin workshop in the coastal town of Teshie, located in Accra. Discover the history of this unique Ga tradition from one of the skilled craftsmen. Fantasy coffins, also known as figurative coffins, are colourful wooden coffins made in Ghana that serve both a functional purpose and as works of art. These coffins are crafted by specialized carpenters in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana and are designed to honour the deceased by representing their most meaningful objects, ideals, or fantasies. Fantasy coffins draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including: - Animals, such as leopards, chickens, and eagles - Household objects, such as microphones or pens - Modes of transport, such as cars, aeroplanes, or trucks - Food items, such as cocoa pods or plantains

5.00Our half-day tour with Clinton of Kwame Tours was a perfect, gentle introduction to Ghana on our first day. Clinton was punctual and pleasant, picking our family group up from our hotel and making everything easy and straightforward. Our first stop was a coffin carving workshop, where we saw the extraordinary “fantasy coffins” made in the tradition of the Ga people. These coffins reflect something meaningful about the deceased’s life, and it was fascinating to see them up close. During our visit we saw a truck and a Bible being made, as well as a completed Nokia mobile phone, an aeroplane and a trainer — dramatic, colourful and distinctive. The workshop itself is quite small, so around 20 minutes there felt about right. We then continued to the nearby Artists Alliance Gallery, which was really worthwhile. The gallery spans four floors and contains a wide range of artefacts and artworks, from antique pieces to contemporary paintings. Clinton gave us plenty of time to explore at our own pace without hurrying us, which we really valued. There was such variety that everyone in our group found something that interested them, and we happily spent over an hour browsing. Afterwards, Clinton took us back to our hotel, making for a relaxed and well-paced afternoon. Overall, this was a very good tour to do at the start of our stay in Accra — interesting, manageable in length, and not too tiring.

5.00What incredible carvings on these coffins. Painted so well they were amazing great guy showing us round and explaining the procedures.
