Live Programs and Tours:

Demonstrations and tours by costumed interpreters are scheduled throughout the day. Exciting programs taking place throughout the 2024 season include a daily Mackinac Parks: 125 program, an updated Soldier’s Life program, an expanded People of Fort Mackinac Timeline Walking Tour, and an exciting Drill, Tactics and Firearms Program. The 2024 daily event schedule will be posted soon.

Exhibits:

All fourteen buildings in the fort are restored and open to the public. They are furnished with period settings highlighting the building’s particular function or a themed exhibit.

Movie:

Heritage of Mackinac is featured in the Post Commissary, providing an overview history of Mackinac. It repeats every 20 minutes.

This is Mackinac. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today.

Original photographs from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century present the beauty of Mackinac as captured by the camera’s eye. Featured are the works of William H. Great experience to tour the grounds and learn the history of Fort Mackinac. Guides along the way are dressed in historical attire and ready to answer any questions. The views from Fort Mackinac are amazing!

Lots of historical buildings. Interesting movie. Stayed for 11 am canon firing. Was raining so limited visibility. End of season so no hat pin souvenirs.

We spent one day on the island and heard from friends that we should go to the Fort Mackinac museum. They weren't wrong! Lots of things to see and well worth the cost. You could spend as much time as you wanted there. Great for history buffs and war buffs in particular!

This was the last stop on a carriage tour. It was wonderful to see the buildings, gift shop, and eat at the tea room. Lots of history and stories within those walls, worth a stop.

Fort was nice to see with knowledgeable staff and boys scouts. Exhibits are educational. They have a interactive kids area as well. They also have extra experiences at certain times of the day. We watched a cannon fire at 11.

The forts are great for history buffs, and really add an educational piece to a visit to the island. Personally, I always find them a little boring, but we just visited with a group of a dozen girl scouts, and I felt like we couldn't pass it up. The girls zipped through a lot of the rooms - they range in age from 5-11 or so, so many of them were a little young to really read all the info. But all the girls seemed to love the kids area with all the hands on displays. In fact, we could have spent a lot longer there if moms hadn't gotten bored lol. I will say - the fort really needs a designated eating area for large groups. We weren't able to find a cluster of picnic tables or even just a cluster of benches to let the girls have their packed lunches and had to more or less plop down in the middle of the fort when they all got cranky and hungry. Was a little awkward.

It's a neat little piece of History for sure. If you plan on buying anything from the gift shop, do it before you leave. You'll have to pay admission again otherwise try the visitors center straight down.

Interesting history of the battles for this strategic island and of the fort. The infrastructure is in good shape and they even fire a cannon every few hours.

The fort was smaller than anticipated. Several buildings you can walk through with period displays that were well done. Nice views overlooking the touristy area. Steep walk back to most hotels. Best for families. Be on the alert for occasional cannon or rifle firing practice!
