Discover two of Bulgaria’s UNESCO World Heritage gems on this day trip from Sofia. Traveling by minibus, admire rural Bulgaria on route to the Rila Monastery in the pine-carpeted Rila Mountains. Take a guided tour of the medieval treasure with its fresco-coated church, and visit its fascinating museum. Then, after time to explore independently, continue to Boyana Church, near Sofia, to marvel at its spectacular pre-Renaissance frescoes. Entrance fees not included.
Important: As of November 2024, Boyana Church now does not take reservations in advance, so we can not guarantee all visits. If entry is unavailable on your booked day, you will be able to visit St. Ivan's Cave at Rila Monastery as an alternative.

Boyana church will NOT be visited on the following days: 1st of January (the tour starts at 11 AM on that day only); The day of Orthodox Easter; 24th and 25th December.

Boyana Church is a small temple at the outskirts of Sofia with frescoes dating back to three separate periods: 11th, 13th and 19th century. The most important and fascinating are the frescoes dating from 1259. They are Renaissance frescoes that predate the Italian Renaissance (triggered by the works of Giotto) and brake the strict Christian canon law to present pure human emotions, royal figures and folklore elements.

4.00We took part in a tour that included a visit to Rila Monastery and Boyana Church. Unfortunately, the organization has not convinced us completely. The group was much too large: we were about 40 people, which made some phases of the day not pleasant. Once on the bus, the guide informed us that to visit the church of Boyana it was necessary to pay € 6.50 per person. We paid, but it had not been explained to us before that access is only allowed to 8 people at a time. The result was that we waited outside for over an hour, in the cold, surrounded by a lot of people. The church, once inside, is very small and honestly not worth the price of the ticket, especially considering the waiting time and conditions. On the contrary, the visit to the Rila Monastery was the best part of the tour: the place is beautiful, suggestive and absolutely worth seeing. It was a positive and interesting experience, which partly lifted the day. In conclusion, tour with potential, but penalized by poor organization and time management, especially regarding the church of Boyana.

5.00I am writing this for Krum & hristo. The person who led me to see historical Unesco site. He even gave us small bonus on another Unesco since traffic was too mild. I Cannot ask for more. They are cool

5.00Amazing from start to finish! Amazing coach driver and our tour guide Ludo was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and made sure the trip was on schedule. Rila monastery is definitely must see when heading to Sofia! Highly recommend!

5.00The tour fulfills what it offers, the time is tight but the driver and guide Yuliana friendly and collaborators ...beyond that Bulgaria is a very nice country, its landscapes, history, churches, there is much to know.... People, typical of the east so you can not expect much in friendly treatment with the tourist who also does not speak the language, but if I have the opportunity I return!!!

5.00The tour was good - we got the audioguide one and it was interesting enough. We didn't enter Boyana as it was similar to other we've seen before, but the Rila Monastery was good. I just think 3h in there is too much. It is really small and nothing to do. 2h would be good enough.

5.00The super fun and friendly guides also knew a lot about everything. The conductor of the microphone also super well. I was a little scared because I had been told bad about the Bulgarian streets and the drivers, but it was all great. I would do the ride again and recommend you do it too!

2.00The highlight was Boyana Church—although the visit was limited to 8 minutes, the information provided there was meaningful and helpful, and the site itself was remarkable. Unfortunately, the Rila Monastery portion was disappointing. The guide repeated very basic facts and did not provide any deeper historical or cultural context. We were given 30 minutes on-site of useless information and repeated. The guide did not mention the museum or other important areas to visit within the monastery complex, nor offer his company to those areas to pay for tickets.. Additionally, the restroom facilities were unacceptable; knowing this in advance, I would have expected the guide to warn us or suggest alternative options. The monastery is undeniably beautiful, but the tour lacked substance and preparation. With better guidance and clearer information, this experience could have been much improved.
