William collected us promptly from our hotel and took us to Soweto. We stopped at the entrance sign for a photostop, then again at the colourful old cooling towers. Next we visited inside part of the townships, met with some of the residents to help us understand the difficult conditions they lived in. Whilst humbling, it was not threatening, everyone was made welcome whilst they got on with their life. We were invited to donate to the school nursery project, but under no pressure. Then we went to Vilakazi Street and the former home of Nelson Mandela, before visiting the scene of the 1976 student uprising, which led to the greater international awareness of the apartheid regime. Our final stop was at the Apartheid Museum, our 90 minutes there could easily have been double but we had a flight to catch. Throughout the whole tour, William was extremely knowledgeable about the history of south Africa from the 17th century, but we focused more on the 20th century and the rise and fall of the apartheid regime, and the role Soweto played in that, and how the townships came about and developed. He explained all this carefully and with an encyclopaedic knowledge. We would certainly recommend this tour to anyone interested in this aspect of the culture and history of South Africa.
