This day long excursion takes us via Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, beautiful Glenmoriston and onward through historic Kintail, the scene of a Jacobite battle. Past the Five Sisters Peaks and down into Lochalsh, we are soon “over the sea to Skye,” pausing for a photograph of Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Duich. Eilein a Cheò (Skye) is in itself a microcosm of all things Highland and indeed Scottish. On this one stretch of beautiful landscape, over 50 miles long but never more than a few miles wide, there can be found the modern day and ancestral homes of two of the great Clans of Scotland, The MacDonalds at Armadale and the MacLeods of Dunvegan. Here too is the scene of a British Naval frigate with over 400 marines being sent to put down resistance by crofters. The marines were on the Island for some six months following the Battle of the Braes near Portree where during the Highland Clearances 50 police dispatched from Glasgow to evict the people from their homes were challenged and seen off, mainly by the womenfolk. Unique in political history this Island and the neighbouring Western seaboard returned 4 members of parliament to Westminster in 1885. They had no party affiliation other than they were all from the crofting community. Their determined collective spirit won them the protection of the Crofting Land Act in 1886. Some of the oldest mountains in the world, the Black Cuillins are here, created by violent volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The lochs, in turn, a by product of the melting glacial bergs from the Ice Age. “Talisker”, the Island’s famous Malt Whisky, is distilled at Carbost. We take a different route home over the Auchtertyre Brae with its panoramic views into Strathcarron down into Achnasheen, Garve and the Kessock Bridge.

5.00If you are visiting Inverness or the Highlands, booking a tour with Andrew MacDonald from Hame Tours is an absolute must. Our experience with Andrew was hands down the most memorable and enriching part of our entire UK trip — worth every cent and every minute. Andrew is an exceptional guide — warm, personable, and unbelievably knowledgeable about Scotland’s rich history, culture, and heritage. From the moment our tour began, he immersed us in the stories, landscapes, and traditions of the Highlands in a way that was engaging, insightful, and deeply authentic. What made the experience even more unique is that Andrew is also a gifted musician and singer. If you’re lucky, he might even grace your tour with a traditional Scottish song, which added such a special, personal touch to the day. My partner and I from Canada were completely captivated... it felt like we were travelling with a friend who just happens to know everything about Scotland. I cannot recommend Hame Tours and Andrew highly enough- 100% worth it. If you’re in Inverness, do yourself a favour and book a tour with Andrew. 5.00Jim was excellent. He was full of historical information and fun facts, plus he answered our many many questions about Scottish life and culture. He was sure to check in with us about the specific places/types of places we wanted to see, and he knew all the right spots. Car was clean and perfect for the trip. Highly recommend!
Don’t go with a group! Go with Andrew!

5.00My husband and I went on a tour of the Isle of Skye with Andrew and it was fantastic! Andrew has so much historical knowledge and a depth of understanding about the Highlands that is unmatched. He kept us laughing + entertained and we so enjoyed our day! We also loved that we had so many options about where to go and what to see!

5.00Fantastic tour! We went from Inverness to Isle of Skye and stopped at various viewpoints and castles along the way. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and personal both of Scottish history and Scottish culture. He tailored the tour to the level of depth and length we were looking for.

5.00Our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary trip to Scotland was in peril of falling completely apart before it could get started. On our first full day in Scotland, the tour guide engaged by our travel company was a no-show. There we were, with a full day trip to see the best of the Scottish Highlands, stranded at our hotel with no driver, no guide, no tickets, and the driver/guide telling us he had us on his books for a different day. Fortunately, the concierge suggested he give Andrew MacDonald of Hame Tours a call. Andrew arrived soon afterwards, and the rest, as they say, is the stuff great travel stories and wonderful memories are made of. Andrew is engaging, personable, deeply knowledgeable, and fun to be with. He got our day immediately back on track. Are you interested in Scottish history? Current events? Architecture? Archeology? Anthropology? How about a four thousand-year old house? Andrew MacDonald is your man. He even quoted poetry and added some Scottish folk songs in a lovely light baritone. If you are planning a trip to Inverness, and are looking for a private guided tour of the best the Highlands has to offer, you cannot do any better than Hame Tours.

5.00Fabulous tour with Michael. Very knowledgeable of Inverness and surrounding area. There were 4 couples and his van was comfortable, clean and a great way to see the area. His sense of humor was delightful and he was willing to accommodate as needed. Highly recommend using Michael if you are in the Inverness area

5.00Michael was our guide who picked us up in a very comfortable Mercedes van promptly at 9:00 am. He was very knowledgeable, informative and filled with local stories. He made great Outlander references and was informative with fun facts about Outlander! My husband was eager to trying on a kilt and Michael directed us to a beautiful store where they sold kilts and other Scottish apparel.

5.00Absolutely recommended! My family and I did a private tour of the Isle of Skye last week, and it was the highlight of our whole week in Scotland. Communication and planning went smoothly: even though we only contacted Andrew a couple of weeks in advance, he helped us organise it and ensured we had a car and a guide for 6 people. On the day, our amazing driver Michael K. went above and beyond to give us the best possible experience. Michel's a great driver, really nice to chat with, and incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Scottish culture and history. He made sure we covered all the spots we wanted to visit, sharing some Scottish snacks and drinks on the way, and accommodating every single preference of our group. We didn't think we could cover so much in one day, but somehow Michael made it happen. Thanks Michael and Hame tours for an unforgettable day!

5.00We used Andrew MacDonald for an airport pickup and two full day tours this last Saturday and Sunday. He was highly referred by the Ness Walk Hotel, one of the best hotels in Inverness. My son and I could not have been happier with Andrew. We originally booked one day, and then booked a second day a few hours after finishing our first day of touring the area around Loch Ness. Our second day tour was the area around the Black Isle. Andrew is extremely knowledgeable about the area, the Highland clan system and Scotland and British history in general. He quoted poetry and sang us some songs while he drove. We both came away with a greater appreciation of the highlands and Scottish and Highlander history and culture. We highly recommend using Andrew for tours!
