There are few landscapes that excite the travelers as much as a visit to the enchanting Meteora.
The gigantic rocks with the breathtaking volume and height, as they sharply arise in the edge of a big flatland, interrupt the smooth landscape like they were unreal, form part of an impressive geological phenomenon that you can’t miss the chance to observe closely. Moreover, the human intervention in this eerie scenery is astonishing: Monasteries built in the highest point of the rocks, seem to hover between earth and sky, between human and divine element. In 1989, Meteora was added in the list of the World Heritage of UNESCO.

Meteora
We reach Meteora at around 12:30p.m; this fascinating complex of huge steep rocks of pennant, arising close to the first elevations of the longest sierra in Greece, Pindos (the “spine” of Greece). We visit two of the six operating Holy Monasteries depending on the schedule of each one. During our visits to the monasteries we make a short stop to admire the stunning panoramic view of the Holy Monasteries from up high and capture the mystique of the landscape. The wild unapproachable area with the sandstones of more than 65 millions years old is majestic and at the same time unearthly and divine as until today their origin cannot be explained. Next, we enjoy our greek traditional lunch break in Kastraki, at Kalampaka area, against the view of the astonishing Meteora. We depart to Thessaloniki at around 15:30p.m and we have a last stop for 20΄ for coffee and rest. We are back at about 19:00p.m, making the same stops where we started from.

Super day trip from Thessaloniki; good for all ages. Ammon Express is a well organized, responsible company, and the bus was super clean and comfortable (important for the hours-long drive to Thessaly). Meteora, though quite crowded with tourists, is a must see while in northern Greece. Eléni was a terrific guide with a wealth of knowledge regarding one of most profoundly historic countries in the Western world. She took care of the roughly 30 members of our group like a personal assistant with travel advice and cuisine recommendations. I could not imagine a better guide for this tour. Remember to bring cash for the monastery entrances, which they advertise.

Metéora is a wonderful monumental place which is worth visiting. Eva is an experienced guide who was taking care of our comfort and safety. The only thing we didn’t appreciate very much was the visit to theĺ restaurant where we felt manipulated by the manager.

It was pretty well organized trip with a lot of sitting in the bus. The bus went right in front of two monastries that we could visit, which was nice. Note that there is no toilet in the bus! The 1h40min travel before a designated toilet break, was painfully long after eating lunch.

It’s a long drive but the views were worth it. It would be nice to have more time there and to explore the town nearby. Our guide was knowledgeable and very pleasant. The forced coffee shop breaks on the way there and back were poor quality and very overpriced. The restaurant was also very pricy. Both clearly a contract with Viator.

Our mistake, this tour only visited 2 of the active 6 monasteries. A previous tour last year was excellent in which we visited 4 monasteries. The trip was very long & the stops were short. Our tour guide was excellent & very knowledgeable. We would gladly do another tour with her. Our stop for lunch was at a higher end restaurant. Despite the food being very good the prices were far too high. Due to a lack of options, it felt like we were being taken advantage of: tiny soup+ moussaka+glass of wine= 50€. You be the judge.

Excellent trip. Unbelievable experience. Breathtaking. This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for me. So glad I went. Our tour guide ‘Tina’ was excellent. Very knowledgeable. Educated us along the way with various sites in Greece. Highly recommend this trip.

Easy to find the meeting point, in front of the statue these big buses stop and the girls have a red thread around their necks. Arrival at the monasteries is scheduled at 11:30, at 9:30 we stopped at a (happily empty) autogrill for a 20-minute break. Occasionally, on the bus, the girl told something about Thessaloniki and its surroundings. Comfortable, warm bus, charging point, wifi, low volume music and water bottles. Being alone, I also had the seat next door free (top) First monastery (Agios Stefano, but they change according to the day you make the trip), very crowded, there are bathrooms. You have 50 minutes Stopped at a beautiful vantage point of 15 minutes, the guide offers to take pictures Second monastery (Varlaam) incredibly beautiful. Also here quite crowded (especially the church), toilets for a fee, amazing view The visit of the monasteries ends at about 14:00, then we head to Kalampaka for lunch. I personally avoided it because other reviews report the high price of meals and from the online menu it is actually high. I got to see Kalampaka. You return with some other little information and stop for 20 minutes at the same autogrill, but on the opposite side of the road. The guide also provides tips for the city. She and the driver are exceptional and very good. Great experience, really.
