Grand Casemates Square

Grand Casemates Square is the larger of the two main squares within the city centre of Gibraltar. The square takes its name from the British-built Grand Casemates, a casemate and bombproof barracks at the northern end of the square completed in 1817. The guide will explain the history of the square from the Moorish times to present day. Also have a look at the 18th century drawbridge which was the only land entrance on and off the Rock for pedestrians during this period.

Landport Gate historically was the only entrance into the fortification of Gibraltar. This tunnel was covered by twenty guns making it perilous to attack and safeguarding the British soldiers inside. This tunnel leads to Casemates Square. The original gate is still standing.

Ruined my only day in Gibraltar. Don’t use Blands Travel. They leave you hanging with no email or text when they no show

If the tour involves Blands Travel I would maybe not book the excursion. They left us hanging with no email or text. We started texting them 5 minutes before the excursion and continued for another 15 minutes with zero response. If we would have known they were cancelling or couldn’t make it we could have made other arrangements. But due to the later start time we couldn’t do anything else except walk around Gibraltar. ( The Rock ). This is very disappointing because we travelled across the pond to do this. We have never had problems with Viator / Trip Advisor before but I am considering never using them again because if a problem occurs there is nobody to contact. Not everyone has cell service but my data works so they could have texted me but the day of the excursion to simply have nobody show is the worst feeling. I am highly disappointed with Blands Travel. Viators contractor. Completely ruining this day. I’m probably going with tours by locals from now on. Viator only gives you 300 letters to convey your complaint or ask for a refund but gives you 20,000 letters for a review. NOT HAPPY

Tessa, our tour guide, was wonderful. She answered all of our questions about Gibraltar thoroughly. I was impressed with the military history and how multicultural the architecture is.
Two tours, two poor experiences

We booked both the rock tour and the walking tour for a group of friends visiting Gibraltar. Both were a disappointment. Rock tour: We were contacted on the day of the tour that this would start 30 minutes late (understandable). The buses then eventually arrived an hour late. Despite this late departure, we were rushed through the tour of the rock, with next to no time in the WW2 tunnels, so that it ended at the time the original tour booking would have ended had it started at the original time. Walking tour: The guide was vocal and grumpy that we had had the audacity of booking a 9am walking tour. 45 minutes into the advertised 2 hour tour we were dumped in the city square and left by the guide to find our way back to the hotel. Unless you enjoy being short changed and rushed, go elsewhere and don’t waste your time with this group. The two stars rather than one star is due to one of the two bus drivers being an absolute delight on the whistle stop tour of the rock, cramming in as much information as he could into the shortened tour.

We really enjoyed this walking tour of the old town. Our knowledgeable local guide (Tessa?) was great, and paced it well, explaining the various parts of the town and how they linked to the history of the place.

Me and my sister absolutely did enjoy the walking tour. It was Tessa our tour guide and she is incredible. She talked about anything under the sun about Gibraltar. We love her personality too. Totally recommend! Love from London

Complete rip off. Guide did not turn up. Completely spoiled our day in Gibraltar. If they were not coming why did they not let us know. We paid extra money to get a taxi to be at the meeting point on time. Will not use this service again
Excellent walking tour

After a shaky start (only had our booking confirmed about an hour before the start time) we enjoyed a very personal walking tour of the centre of Gibraltar. Our guide was born and bred Gibraltan and passionate about his home giving us a good insight of all the history and offering tips on other places to go, things to see etc. We learned so much in these 90 mins and were thankful it stayed dry!

Our Guide Eddie Homes provided us with a detailed history of Gibraltar during our walk, we were taking to a couple of places that I did know that existed (I have been to Gibraltar many times) Like the art museum he had good knowledge of the artist on display. We tagged on the Gin tasting to the walk and the was very good.
