Formerly known as Plac Zgody, this square served as the administrative and deportation center of the Kraków Ghetto. Today, renamed Ghetto Heroes Square, it stands as a place of remembrance, marking the beginning of the tragic journey for thousands of Jewish residents.
Plaszow Concentration Camp
Plaszow Camp was established by Nazi German occupiers in October 1942 on the grounds of two Jewish cemeteries. Initially a forced-labor camp for Jews from the liquidated Kraków Ghetto, it later expanded to include Polish prisoners and, in January 1944, was reclassified as a concentration camp. It also functioned as a transit camp for Hungarian Jews deported to Auschwitz. More than 35,000 people were imprisoned here, and approximately 6,000 were murdered. Executions took place at several locations within the camp; today, mass graves & memorials silently mark the terrain. During this guided walk, your expert guide reconstructs the camp’s layout using what remains: the Grey House, ruins of the pre-burial hall, traces of the former Jewish cemeteries, the roll-call square, paths once paved with fragments of gravestones. You will pause at key memorials, including the Monument of Torn-Out Hearts, while learning how the camp was divided into living, hospital, administrative, industrial zones.

Fil was our guide for this tour. His English was exeptional and he explained everything in detail. There was no rushing and plenty of time to reflect. It was slightly uphill in areas but with plenty of stops at history boards it was easy to catch your breath. I don't think it's suitable for wheelchair users as the ground is gravely and it would be a bumpy ride for baies. With the Schindler list film being based on this camp you can get a harrowing insight into how terrifying this place was, especially seeing 'roll call square'. It was very atmospheric and quiet with a few dog walkers and visitors. It's free to enter. They are developing this memorial and turning it into a museum.

6/5⭐️ I don’t think I give high scores out so easily and please keep in mind our guide did not ask us to write a review at all. There were five of us in the group including myself and our guide, Helena. The tour didn’t feel rushed, like some often do. Very knowledgeable guide, she captured the horror of the camp using photos and testimonies. She also explained at each location what was previously there and what happened, as now most of the buildings have been restricted.

This is a tour unlike Auschwitz in that your have to use your imagination a bit because not much is left to see buildings wise. There are information signs/boards dotted about and clear lever pathways to walk but our guide whose name I forget, helped us enormously to picture the scene. She even showed us "The Red House" (not on the tour) but where Amon Goeth lived. (Film Schindlers list) The Grey House is where he worked and where he by all accounts shot randomly at POW's for fun. The only issue for us with this tour was the weather. It was one of the hottest days of the year and this place does not have a lot of shade. So be prepared. We took cold towels and cold flask drinks but hardy as I am, I still came close to ending the tour early, but only because of the intense heat/fatigue. (how can I moan, the inmates had it far worse) As I say the tour is excellent if you wish to see a less popular historic tourist place on your stay here. We were the only two on this tour.

I would highly recommend this trip, our guide (sorry I forgot her name but her aunty was at this camp) was so lovely, friendly, informative. You could tell she was very passionate about the history of the camp. We booked this trip with no knowledge of the camp itself, after the trip I learnt so much and have told people to do this trip. Our guide answered all our questions with ease and helped us get our train tickets.

During our stay in Krakow, we booked a guided tour of the former Plaszow labour camp. Our tour guide Dominika informed us in detail about the previous circumstances and guided us through the camp. Since this has been completely liquidated, you can see very few relics of the time and a guided tour is absolutely recommended.

Michael was amazingly knowledgeable and a very good narrator. He did an excellent job of humanizing the suffering at that concentration camp.
