In a labyrinth that once comprised more than 20,000 corridors, an experienced guide takes you underground to see the names and drawings of people who worked here every day a few hundred years ago. Did you know that with a capacity of 50,000 people,, the expansice cave network was able to provide shelter for many of Maastricht’s residents during the Second World War. An evacuation area with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps, and many more facilities were all constructed underground, though never put into full use. Remnants of them can still be seen.

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with Paul; his knowledge is phenomenal, and how he navigates the underground route so incredibly well with all those tunnels remains a mystery to us. We loved the drawings, the stories, and the darkness. Thank you for this experience.

A beautiful experience to discover these underground tunnels. Most beautiful experience was to experience total darkness!

Nice and interesting tour at Maastricht Underground (Sonneberg). Guide Willy knows a lot about how the caves came to be, who sat there and what they were all used for. He explains everything clearly and does it with humor, so it never becomes boring for a moment. You can also just ask questions in between, which is nice. Definitely recommended if you want to do something special in Maastricht.

The guide Harrald is a very nice man who is very enthusiastic and has a lot of knowledge about the quarry. He could also convey the story to his group really nicely. The excursion was instructive and also really recommended to do.

Although it's not very spectacular, our guide Harry made it a fun outing. In itself, it is interesting to see what happened in the tunnels (not caves) and how one proceeded in extracting sand-lime stone (not marl).

Compliments to our guide Joe. He took us on February 14th in his beautiful stories about the Zonnenberg cave and museum. He took the time to answer our questions and knew a lot to tell, which was very interesting. That he was a history teacher certainly made us listen to him carefully. The walk that took almost 2 hours was fascinating. Joe, thank you and have fun at the reunion in July, 30 years after the last time...:)😀
