  Guided tours are, in my opinion, essential to enjoy this place to the fullest and to grasp its richness. We had a visit in English with our guide, Borbála, who knew how to share with passion and precision his memories of youth in Hungary. In particular, it has enlightened us about the conditions of life under the Communist regime and the omnipresence of propaganda in all aspects of daily life. Monumental statues, once scattered throughout Budapest before 1991, take on a whole new dimension. The museum also offers the screening of training films for Hungarian intelligence agents, used to track down “traitors”: rare, fascinating and particularly immersive documents. Beyond the historical aspect, the impressive statues as well as the Trabant exhibited at the entrance are worth a visit!

  Ilda was the best guide! very informative on every detail we asked, Would have missed out on so much fascinating history if we had not had the guided tour with such an excellent guide. Ilda told us about her own experiences, Hungarian history and the context of the monuments. Along with making the backgrounds of the monuments much more understandable, Ilda's personal stories made the information much more real and alive.

  “There was once an era which expressed itself through these threatening symbols” (G.Boros). Having “liberated” Hungary, the authorities glorified the communist ideal and its representatives. Memento Park is well worth a guided visit (buy a written guide, at the very least). Seven of us paid for a private tour on a Wednesday (it cost us about £14 per head, including entry). Zoltan is an excellent guide. There were plenty of laughs for such a serious, historical subject. As a child, Zoltan was a member of the Communists’ Pioneer Association. He remembers one of the statues from his home district. His grandfather was forced to work in a foreign mine. It was easy and economical to reach Memento Park. We used a Bolt taxi.

  I bought, directly on the Memento Park website, the package including round trip transport from the hotel in a real "vintage" Trabant car (bursting Soviet East German car), entrance fee, Italian tour and a drink each. Everything was perfectly managed by the very nice guide Judit who, with great historical, political and social knowledge of the 42 great statues, easily allowed us to "get" into the true meaning of the tour: understanding the period and the almost theatrical spectacularity of Hungary's relations with "mother" Russia. The Memento Park, ultimately, collects the colossal sculptures of the pressing and continuous Soviet propaganda (ideological, military and economic) that after the 1956 uprising were moved a little outside Budapest. The statues are well arranged in the large open area, easily photographed and without particular architectural barriers. Apart from Judit's very clear explanations, it is still recommended to buy the pretty booklet "In the shadow of Stalin's boots", printed and paginated as was used in the years of Soviet rule. In conclusion: a must see!

  Park of historical memory linked to Soviet domination until the 1956 uprising. Along an outdoor route the guide (in English) talks about the period from World War II onwards also citing personal and family memories. Many exhibits are copies of Soviet propaganda statues from which various significant and touching moments of that difficult period unfold.

  It was a very enriching experience. You'll see things that aren't at all touristy. It's a well-researched and very informative open-air art and culture gallery.

  Ildi was an absolutely brilliant guide. She gave us such great insight into the history of Budapest, and was incredibly knowledgeable about the artists and what the statues convey. Ildi's knowledge and passion shone through the whole tour. I definitely learned much more than if I hadn't have taken the tour and I highly recommend it.
