Welcome to Gwangju — a city that rose up in 1980 and became a symbol of Korea’s struggle for democracy: the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
As a local guide born and raised in this very city, I am honored to share this powerful chapter of our past with you.
May 18 was a courageous stand by the people of Gwangju who fought against military dictatorship and demanded democracy. Despite facing overwhelming force, the citizens of Gwangju rose up, and their sacrifice became a turning point in South Korea’s path toward democracy.
Join me on this tour to gain a deeper understanding of the May Spirit — the spirit of resistance, sacrifice, sharing, and solidarity that united citizens during those ten historic days — and together, let’s reflect on the sacrifices that continue to shape Gwangju and the nation today.
The May 18 Democratic Uprising was listed as a UNESCO Memory of the World in 2011.

May 18 Democracy Square is a symbolic site of Korean democracy. It refers to the circular fountain and spacious plaza in front of the former South Jeolla Provincial Office, which served as the final stronghold for citizens who resisted the military dictatorship during the May 18 Uprising. At the time, the square became a central gathering place where citizens held rallies, using the fountain as a platform to express their determination and solidarity. Today, it hosts memorial ceremonies, cultural events, and educational activities, and continues to stand as a powerful symbol of the people’s struggle for democracy and human rights.
5.18 Archives
The May 18 Archives, established in 2015, is housed in the former Gwangju Catholic Center. It is a public facility dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the historical records of the May 18 Democratic Uprising. The center serves not only as a place of remembrance but also as an educational space that helps visitors understand the significance of the uprising in South Korea’s democratic history. The facility includes permanent exhibition halls that present a day-by-day account of the 10-day uprising. Through photographs, videos, documents, and personal testimonies, the exhibits offer a powerful and moving account of the courage and sacrifice of the people of Gwangju.

Gwangju and May 18 Memorials are essential for anyone outside of South Korea to understand the country’s incredible transformation from a brutal military dictatorship to a thriving (and noisy!) democracy. South Koreans have fought for every liberty they now enjoy and there’s no better person to guide you through this phase of Korean history and life than Veronica Kim. She is outstanding in very way, knows the Gwangju history completely, has empathy for victims and their families, and has a keen awareness of how history can be presented to tell one side of a story. As a Gwangju local, Veronica knows all the best restaurants and recreation spots. She’s a great resource, a generous guide, and an outstanding asset to tourism in Gwangju. Five stars!

An emotionally and historically important trip for anyone interested in history. Veronica provided such a detailed, comprehensive tour about the events leading up to the Gwangju Uprising, as well as the repercussions that extended into modern day. Veronica allowed space to process the events, and on the flip side provided insightful information about the Jeolla region cuisine! Such an amazing experience and I’m so glad I made the trip to Gwangju.
