This value-packed trip with a government-licensed and experienced tour guide is a fantastic and efficient way to explore Hakodate!
Hakodate has a long history of international trade and as such hosted a small foreign community. That influence is evident in the European buildings, churches, and red-brick warehouses that you can see from the nostalgic streetcar that makes its rounds of the city.

Mount Hakodate
Mount Hakodate (函館山, Hakodateyama) is a 334 meter high, wooded mountain at the southern end of the peninsula on which much of central Hakodate is located. On clear days and nights, in particular, the views from the mountain are spectacular and included among Japan's three best night views alongside the views from Nagasaki's Mount Inasa and Kobe's Mount Rokko. Facilities at the summit, which is accessible by ropeway, bus or car, include observation platforms (free of charge), souvenir shops, a cafe and a cafeteria style restaurant.
Onuma Quasi-National Park
Designated as a "quasi national park" and located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (大沼公園, Ōnuma Kōen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic volcano, Mount Komagatake. Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stop over on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo, since most limited express trains between the two cities stop at Onuma Koen Station, the central railway station.

Kazuo was a great guide! It was so nice to have a local accompany us on our first day in Japan. He met us at the pier and ensured that we got to see as much as possible, despite the windy and rainy day. He was invaluable in getting us a couple taxis and now we feel more comfortable using public transportation as well, as we have a couple weeks to go on our trip! I would highly recommend. So nice not to have a big group and get to do what you want, however long you want. He also ensured he got us back to our ship.

Get to see more sights, don't need to deal with big group, don't have to deal with how to get to the sights, because the tour guide know the way & go at our paste which is important for seniors.

We spent a great day with our guide Toru Higaki. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side so we didn’t get to see Mt Fuji! Nonetheless, Toru made our day enjoyable and at lunchtime, introduced us to eel which was delicious. Thank you Toru!

Thank you Mr Akira for his knowledgeable history of Goryokaku Park is an iconic star-shaped fort located in Hakodate. First, we went to Morning market followed by taking local tram to Goryokaku Tower & stroll walk in Goryokaku Park. Thereafter, we went to Mount Hakodate but due to raining heavily we can only view motomachi in the taxi. Overall, a good experience 👍

Keiko is such a great guide. Though the weather is not that great the day, but she really lights up our day. Everything she told us was so interesting and inspiring. Also we have our best ice cream in Hakodate recommended by her. Can’t imagine such a lovely lady with so much energy and passion. We can feel how much she loves the city during our conversations.

We were in Hakodate for one day and wanted a customized overview of the city. Akira met us at our hotel and took us to 4 major sites which gave us a historical perspective of Japan and Hakodate’s crucial role in the Samurai civil war. He helped us navigate public transportation and avoid long lines at the Ropeway. We also found out about local cuisine and favorite dishes for people in Japan when visiting the morning fish market. The guide was very responsive to our requests and knowledgeable about the area. We wanted to see the Museum of the Northern Peoples which wasn’t on the normal tour, so he took us there at the end of our time together and went through the museum with us. We were very pleased with the tour.

We did the full day Hakone trip with Hideaki Nakayama as our guide. The trip was well organized, informative, smooth and fun. Hide was an amazing guide - we had such a great time thanks to him. He went over and above our expectations. Hide even made sure we got on our return train without any problems 🥰. Many thanks for a spectacular day.

Humi was friendly knowledgeable and flexible on our full day tour of Hakodate. She learned that we wanted to eat fresh Hokkaido snow crab and worked that into our visit to the morning market. It was the best snow crab we have ever eaten…sweet and tasty! Then we visited the tower, fort and Mt. Hakodate and learned about the importance of Hakodate in the Japanese civil war that ended the Shogunate. When Humi learned we need train tickets to Noboribetsu the next day, she ended our tour at the JR station where she helped us to purchase our seats. We were lucky we did that because the train was sold out the next day! Thanks Humi for being flexible and sharing your city with us.
