This value-packed trip with a government-licensed and experienced tour guide is a fantastic and efficient way to explore Hakodate!
Hakodate has a long history of international trade and as such hosted a small foreign community. That influence is evident in the European buildings, churches, and red-brick warehouses that you can see from the nostalgic streetcar that makes its rounds of the city.

Mount Hakodate
Mount Hakodate (函館山, Hakodateyama) is a 334 meter high, wooded mountain at the southern end of the peninsula on which much of central Hakodate is located. On clear days and nights, in particular, the views from the mountain are spectacular and included among Japan's three best night views alongside the views from Nagasaki's Mount Inasa and Kobe's Mount Rokko. Facilities at the summit, which is accessible by ropeway, bus or car, include observation platforms (free of charge), souvenir shops, a cafe and a cafeteria style restaurant.
Onuma Quasi-National Park
Designated as a "quasi national park" and located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (大沼公園, Ōnuma Kōen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic volcano, Mount Komagatake. Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stop over on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo, since most limited express trains between the two cities stop at Onuma Koen Station, the central railway station.

Thank you Mr Akira for his knowledgeable history of Goryokaku Park is an iconic star-shaped fort located in Hakodate. First, we went to Morning market followed by taking local tram to Goryokaku Tower & stroll walk in Goryokaku Park. Thereafter, we went to Mount Hakodate but due to raining heavily we can only view motomachi in the taxi. Overall, a good experience 👍

A great time with Heiji, and a light snow shower just made the scene even more memorable. We greatly enjoyed the Goryokaku Tower and the fort below, as well as the morning market and the former consulate's headquarters. He even spoke both English and Spanish - a remarkable feat! We had a wonderful time with Heiji, and would recommend this tour to all who swing through Hakodate

I had a great day in Hakodate with my English-speaking guide, Fumi. She was very organized and was at the hotel right on time to meet me, and shared lots of information about Hakodate during my tour. We started our visit with a trip to Goryokaku Park, where we took the elevator to see the view from the top. It was a nice, clear day so it was easy to see the star-shaped fort below. Fumi also helped me with shipping my souvenirs with Yamato when I bought too many to carry. :-) I appreciated her assistance. From there we went to Mt. Hakodate via the ropeway and had a really nice lunch with an amazing view. We also toured Motomachi, had a little stroll along the bay, and visited the Red Brick Warehouse. It was a really nice day, and I hope to come back again and do another tour with Fumi-san.

Overall had a fun day with Fumiko-san - she's a kind and considerate companion. For me the highlight was the visit to the top of Mount Hakodate which had absolutely spectacular views of the city. Sad that the Goryokaku Tower was closed but that was something out of the control of the tour operators.
