Witness the dawning of a new day atop Haleakala (the house of the sun) a dormant volcanic mountain overlooking Maui on the east side. Deep canyons and slopes and unspoiled terrain are home to endemic Hawaiian Nene geese and rare Silversword plants.
You'll be transported in a comfortable mini coach to 9,740 feet elevation, close to the summit to witness the ultimate sunrise; a spectacular show of lights and colors. The sunrise tour is an unforgettable experience and a definite must-do on your Hawaii vacation. On the descent, marvel at sprawling scenic views of Kula and the Pacific Ocean on your way to breakfast at local favorite, Cafe O'Lei at the Plantation in Waikapu.

Haleakala is known for rapidly changing weather conditions and dense clouds and rain are common. As a result, clear viewing of the sunrise is not guaranteed, and the tour operates rain or shine. Refunds will be granted only when the tour is cancelled for safety reasons.
The high altitude at the summit area may complicate health conditions and breathing difficulties. Elderly visitors, pregnant women, young children, and those with respiratory or heart conditions should consult their doctor prior to touring. Walk slowly and drink water to avoid dehydration. If you have gone scuba diving, you should wait at least 72 hours before going on this tour.

The sunrise itself was quite beautiful and worth it. However, we were told to arrive 15 mins before the 2:30 AM pick up time in front of our hotel. So we did. Then we sat there until 3:05 AM. I assumed we were at the wrong pick up spot or something. I called the number for the tour operator, but of course no one is in at 2:45-3 AM! It was very anxiety provoking. At 3:05, the tour bus swings in to pick us up. I was so relieved to see him that I didn't even bring up the late pick up. My family had been pulled out of bed at 1:30 AM after all and if it had been for nothing...So we go on the trip. Our tour guide Wayne was a TALKER. On way up, he gave us about a 20 minute break from the talking but on the way back he never stopped talking. He literally talked the whole way back. I would have preferred some nice Hawaiian music sometimes. Or a recording to listen to - that way if you wanted to hear about the mountain, the birds, the bushes, the rock formations, the restaurants, and on and on and on - you could listen OR you could skip it. My husband got car sick on the way back and I think the talking made it worse for him. (His getting car sick is not Wayne's fault. In spite of 2 dramamine, he still got super nauseous.) We stopped at the Maui Plantation for breakfast. It was lackluster. It was lukewarm where they had pre-prepared it so far in advance. It was basic scrambled eggs, purple sweet potatos, 2 small discs of sausage and a little bit of bacon. They had coffee and POG juice also. But the plantation is a cool place to visit - we usually do anyway when we visit Maui. Saved us the drive to it! I do recommend this trip - at least once. But maybe not if you are prone to motion sickness and not if you don't like listening to a talkative talking talker.

Great tour guide and super organized. The breakfast was at a nice place. The views were spectacular as well. A bit pricier though since you can drive up yourself at a different time if sunrise isn't your thing. Also there were so many people at the view that we had to stand in the back and couldn't enjoy it as much as others.

This tour was incredible! Preston was an excellent guide—so funny and engaging, and he made the early morning wake-up totally worth it. He knew exactly where to take us for the best sunrise views at Haleakalā and made the whole experience memorable. Big shoutout to Polynesian Adventure Tours as well—after I accidentally left my sunglasses on the bus, they went above and beyond to return them to my accommodation the next day. Amazing service all around. Highly recommend!

Awesome experience, one everyone should do when on the island. Long trip up and down the mountain, which at times felt like the tour operator was stretching out too much.
