The visit to La Leona Waterfall is an unforgettable memory: a turquoise cascade inside of a narrow volcanic cave dug by the river over thousands of years. The hike along the river offers good chances to spot wildlife like white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, egrets, bats and the beautiful blue morpho butterfly. You will also admire ancient lava flows exposed by the erosion of the canyon walls. An adventure that you can´t miss if you visit the surroundings of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.

We will begin our adventure with a short ride aboard one of our vehicles until we reach the starting point by the Blanco River. There our guide will give us a safety talk and we will head along the riverside enjoying the exuberant nature that this turquoise-colored river offers us. We continue our hike inside the river canyon going through volcanic caves and crossing some river strings until we reach the famous La Leona Waterfall, a magical place hidden inside of a cave. Once there we will have enough time to take pictures and swim in front of this natural wonder.

This was such an incredible excursion for my family. We had a group of six, youngest is 5 years old and oldest was 62 and our tour guide was incredible (Allen, El Pollo Loco). I would recommend this hike to anyone traveling to Costa Rica.

We liked the hike and the explanations of our guide Luis. The river is amazing, translucent and very mineral which makes sure there are no fish or plants. To get past the part where you can see the fall, you have to pull along a rope and it's quite physical because you have to force before the guides catch us for the belt. I do not recommend people who have shoulder problems or physical disabilities. It's for more athletic activity enthusiasts.

“Randy” was amazing. Very kind and helpful. We had a great time! It was just our family and Randy pointed out interesting flora, trees and insects. I had recently suffered a sprained ankle and broken toe and Randy was always offering a hand to help me keep from fuether injury.

This was definitely one of a kind tour to go on. Even though the hike there might not be the easiest, then it's all worth it. There were so many amazing water spots before the waterfall and then the finish with the picture perfect view at the end. Just amazing! Definitely recommend! Great guides, everything was well planned and perfectly tailored.

In all honesty this is one of the best nature hikes available in CR, walking alongside the Sky Blue waters of the river, while at the same time entering caves with bats and dipping in the cool waters to refresh from the Guanacaste heat to finally arriving at the Leona waterfall is just breathtaking! 10000% recommended.
