On this tour you’ll delve into Portugal’s Neolithic period (circa 5500 to 3000 BC) and explore two of the region’s earliest and most remarkable megalithic sites: the Menir of Almendres and the Cromlech of Almendres.
The Alentejo is home to many megalithic structures, including cromlechs, menirs, and dolmens. It is during this period when agriculture emerged, along with many other significant cultural and social developments.
Enjoy some time away from the city with a lovely walk through a cork forest, where these megaliths live.
Your tour guides are professional archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of the region and look forward to showing you some spectacular sites from Portugal's past.

The path to the Menir is in poor condition and those with reduced mobility may not be able to reach it.
The walk to the Cromlech from where the road is cut is 1.25 km there and another 1.25km back.
Guests should have a moderate fitness level as this tour is outdoors and requires walking approx. 1 hour.

Cromeleque dos Almendres
From Evora we will embark on a 25 minute drive to reach the path to the Menir of Almendres. We will then make the 5–10 minute walk down the picturesque path to visit this impressive solitary stone. Please note that the path to the Menir is in poor condition and those with reduced mobility may not be able to reach it. Next, we will continue driving amongst the cork trees through the Almendres property and make our way to the Cromlech of Almendres, often referred to as the Stonehenge of Portugal. The road to access the Cromlech is in poor shape and has been cut by the Municipality of Evora (they have also advised guests not to drive past this point), so we will park the van and walk ~25 minutes (1.25km or 0.77 miles) to reach the monument. At the site, we will continue our discussion of the Neolithic and provide an overview of the theories associated with the monument. You will learn about the history of this site from archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of this region.
Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres
After we have finished visiting the Almendres Cromlech, we will walk back to the van and slowly drive out of the Almendres complex. As we leave the property, we will make a stop at the gift shop (Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres) if it is open. You will have some free time to browse and explore. Our return journey to Évora will commence thereafter, with drop-offs scheduled between 12:00-13:00 (morning tour) & 17:00-18:00 (afternoon tour).

5.00Gonzalo and Bianca were absolutely incredible today! Because of the previous storms we had to change plans for the tour, but it couldn’t have went better. This is undoubtably one of our favorite tours we have ever taken. We came away with a deeper appreciation of our ancestors that erected these structures, but humanity in general at a time when we need it the most. This tour was life changing for us. The professionalism, knowledge and sense of humor this team has makes the tour fascinating and comfortable. By the end of the tour you feel like friends. Thank you guys!

5.00The two sympathetic archaeologists were very competent, explained vividly and interestingly. They picked us up on time and took a lot of time to answer questions, gave us the opportunity to take pictures and browse the museum shop. It was an advantage for us to receive a personal tour for two from Bianca and Gerardo.

5.00We had such a great time! Our guides were so knowledgeable (both were trained archeologists with expertise in the late stone age through early bronze age in the Alentejo) and so it was incredible getting the inside scoop into the broader prehistoric context for the region as a whole. Since we didn't have a car, the hotel pickup/drop-off was also very much appreciated... we even got a great recommendation for dinner that evening. Thanks for a wonderful trip!

An excellent way to learn more about the history of the region around Évora

5.00This tour is a wonderful way to spend a thoroughly different half-day while staying in Évora. Bianca and Gonçalo will collect you from your hotel and take you into the countryside, educating you the whole time. They are knowledgeable, professional and good company. Only six guests will fit in the van, so the group size will always be manageable. We went with two Canadians and an American and had enjoyable conversations as we drove and walked. The ancient sites are magnificent, mysterious and well worth a visit.
