Nice trip to three major sites around Avignon. We had enough time in each place. Our driver/guide was very nice and knowledgeable about the area. Unfortunately he did not go with us into the colosseum in Nîmes and the town of Uzès. He just dropped us off with instructions on where to go and then picked us up one hour later. He did go with us to the Pont du Gard, and his explanations and storytelling were great. Total duration was about 5 hours. It was an afternoon well spent.

Very bad tour for viator Only 30 minutes spent in 2 places and 45 in Nimes and spent more time waiting for the guide who was late picking us up outside at the tourist office and then a good 15 minutes in Nimes which must of cut in to the time we spent in Uzes only 30 minutes very disappointed guide was just going through the motions no interest in his job not like the amazing Natalie on my other tour

Our tour guide Frédéric was marvelous. My husband and I surprisingly ended up with a private tour. The tour was quite enlightening and very educational. Frédéric explained a lot. Since it was just us, we had his undivided attention. Very appreciative. We missed out on getting into the colosseum because of a gladiator festival taking place all weekend, but seeing the townsman dressed up in Roman period was entertaining. The Pont-du-Gard was an amazing sight to see. Since it was a half day tour, we were able to see everything and still have time to do our own sightseeing in Avignon.

Our guide for the day, Thierry, did much more than required to make our day a special one. Moreover, he knew his local history and its larger context -- after all, the day is all about Roman history -- and he also managed to work in some medieval history, too. I particularly enjoyed the Pont-du-Gard aquaduct (be sure to see it from the top of the cliffs on each side of the structure, which requires ascending a lot of steps, but it will be worth it, particularly if the sun striked one side of the ruin more than the other), the Roman arena in Nîmes (which as far as I'm concerned is a full-fledged Roman colliseum, so massive is it -- even if much smaller than the one in Rome), and don't forget the Roman temple only a block or two away in Nîmes, which is well worth seeing because it's so well-preserved. (I had the impression that seeing the temple was "optional," though I could be wrong -- in any event, I certainly did not want to miss it, especially since it was such a short walk from the arena.) The visit to Uzes has nothing to do with Roman history, but it's a nice place to take a break between the Roman ruins in Pont-du-Gard and Nîmes, and since the Uzes visit falls around lunch time you can grab a bit to eat there. I highly recommend the ratatouille at Les Terroirs, if you want to experience this classic local fare (which was often surprisingly absent from menus elsewhere): it was perfect, and quite possibly the best dish I ate while in France.

The guide, “Terry,” was knowledgeable and friendly and rearranged the tour to make the most of the unusually rainy weather. Also, he went out of his way to help us catch a bus after the tour.
