The DMZ has always been a topic of interest among travelers to Korea for its historical significance, the Korean War aftermath that still affects the two countries even to this day.
Although the DMZ is a heavily military-controlled border area, certain regions around the DMZ are made accessible to civilians as a way to remember the sacrifice and loss from the Korean War, appreciate the nature reserve left untouched for decades, and hope for a peaceful reunification.

The Third Tunnel
The 3rd Tunnel is the third of its kind built by North Korea for the purpose of invading South Korea. It was discovered in 1978. Among the four tunnels located so far, it is closest to Seoul (about 52 km). It has a total length of 1.6 km and a width of 2 m. It is estimated that nearly 30,000 personnel can move through the tunnel every hour. Visitors to the 3rd Tunnel must reserve the tour in advance. The tour starts from the Imjingak Pavilion. All visitors are required to bring their identification, such as passports or Alien Registration Card (ARC).
Dora Observatory
Dora Observatory is the closest DMZ observatory to Panmunjeom. From Dora Observatory, one can see not only the Panmunjeom but also the village of Daeseong-dong within the DMZ, mountains and farmlands on the North Korean side, and the city of Gaeseong, a North Korean city and the historic capital of Goryeo (918-1392). Individual visits are not allowed. The observatory can only be accessed through the DMZ Peace Tour, which embarks from Imjingak Pavilion after reservation. All visitors are required to bring their identification, such as passports or Alien Registration Card (ARC).

5.00Chris is very knowledgeable. His knowledge comes from a place of genuine interest in history and not just the bare minimum needed to get through the tour. We learned more than we expected and his company was easy and enjoyable.

5.00Chris is a superior guide for those who want to understand the history and significance of the Korean War and the modern impact of the divided Korea on its citizens and culture. There was no question he could not answer in depth, plus looking after my comfort and welfare during the whole experience. For those who want to go beyond the standard trip and learn a lot in the process, I highly recommend this tour and guide.

5.00We loved our visit to the DMZ. Chris was very informative on all the aspects of the background, history and current political climate around this historic area. Just be sure to bring your passports with you for the tour, as they are required to secure tickets. We didn't have ours, but Chris was able to vouch for us and get us our tickets. It's a great place to visit and see history, both past and present.

5.00We were traveling from the US with several stops in Asia. During this trip we had 2 long layovers in Seoul. During the first stop we met Chris and he took us to downtown Seoul. We enjoyed it so much that we had him pick us up at the airport during our layover back home and take us to the DMZ. We had approx. 11 hours which was more than enough. The entire trip was around 6 hours, and we were not rushed at all, we even had time to pick up a few souvenirs at the end. If you just want an overview this trip is not for you, but if you love to get into the historical details, Chris is your guy. He has so much knowledge about Korea, pre and post WWII, it is quite amazing. We definitely recommend Chris, we had two great days seeing and learning about all things Korea!
