The Voortrekker Monument

This is Biggest Monument in Africa. Specifically important to the overall understanding of Boer culture in South Africa in the 1800’s. While Pretoria at that time was Boer capital. Built to honour those who left the Cape Colony under British control in pursuit of self determination. Subsequently left the Cape colony between 1835 and 1855 and became known as Voortrekkers. It is a massive 40 metre high granite structure built on a hill top and can be seen from most parts of Pretoria. The laager wall of 64 wagons circles the Voortrekker monument while being the same number of wagons used in battle of Blood River. A very significant battle in South Africa’s past. Above all the Voortrekker monument played a huge part in uniting Afrikaners in 1940s. Thus was important in bringing about Apartheid. As a result, Afrikaans is today still very prominent in Pretoria. Although Pretoria is also culturally diverse it's culturally different to Johannesburg.

Outstanding Half-Day Pretoria Tour with Wajo! We recently did a half-day trip to Pretoria with Wajo as our drive and tourist guide, and it was absolutely perfect from start to finish! Everything ran smoothly – punctual pickup, comfortable transport, and a well-planned itinerary that covered all the key highlights without feeling rushed. What truly made the experience exceptional was Wajo's incredible knowledge. He has a huge depth of understanding about South Africa's rich history, from the Voortrekker era and apartheid struggles to the transition to democracy. He brought the sites like the Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument, and Church Square to life with fascinating stories and context. But he didn't stop at the past – Wajo also shared insightful perspectives on modern South Africa, including current politics, culture, and social dynamics, which gave me a well-rounded view of the country today. Wajo is passionate, engaging, friendly, and patient with questions – he made the tour feel personal and fun. I learned so much and left with a deeper appreciation for Pretoria and South Africa as a whole. the tour was excellent! Our guide, Vuyo was extremely knowledgeable and took good care of us. We learned so much and had a terrific afternoon. Very easy to book and to get to Pretoria from our hotel in Johannesburg. Highly recommend this tour and Vuyo!
