3.00We booked 3D/2N on Le Journey Elegance, which was supposed to be a 5 star boat. The staff were wonderful and very friendly. Ha Long Bay is beautiful. The excursions were well-run as far as leaving on time, being clear what we were doing, etc. However it was very touristy. First excursion on the afternoon we arrived was kayaking. That was fine, if you know how to kayak. There was no instruction, no asking if people could swim, etc. We enjoyed it, but some who hadn’t kayaked before really struggled. Next day excursion was to a pearl farm (very interesting), a local village, more kayaking and swimming. Last morning excursion was to the Hospital Cave, it was crowded but interesting too. Activities on the boat were disappointing. We were told there was a hot tub, but it wasn’t heated. We were told there was mini golf, but it was one small strip of turf with one hole, about 6’ long, and there were no golf balls, and only wedges, no putters. Food was terrible. It was mostly western food, cooked well in advance of eating so it was always served cold. The only decent meal was breakfast, with hot noodle soup and eggs cooked to order. No water was served with meals, you had to either pay for it, or get it from the water cooler in the lobby (on another floor from the dining room). Drinks were really expensive, USD 8 for a small glass of wine. Suggest they serve Vietnamese food which is what we came to Vietnam for, and serve it hot if it’s meant to be hot. There were only 13 people on our cruise so it shouldn’t be that hard to serve hot food. The rooms were just ok. Maybe our expectations were too high but we expected 5 star and it just wasn’t. Our “king” bed was 2 twins pushed together, I kept rolling into the gap. We were only given 1 towel each. Our neighbor’s bath flooded because the drain was blocked, and they just gave them towels to mop it up themselves, and never came to get the wet towels. We might have watched too many episodes of Below Deck, but the experience was like a parody of a 5 star cruise.
