Beginning with a selection of specialties in a timeless neighborhood Lokanta, we’ll visit a pickle-maker and other artisans. Winding our way through the district’s atmospheric side streets, there will be specialties from across the country, ranging from the far Northeast to the Black
Sea to the distinct cuisine of Hatay in the Southeast. We’ll visit a hidden Armenian church inside a bustling fish market between samplings at street vendors fishmongers and grill joints and, finally, we’ll treat ourselves to the best Turkish coffee in the city.
Depending on the day and what the walk comes across, there will be several other culinary surprises along the way of this food tour in Istanbul, all of them telling the fascinating tale of what is perhaps the city’s most iconic neighborhood.

A great experience, particularly for a one-night stay

5.00I very much enjoyed this tour last night with a small group (me solo plus two other guests). Başak was a fantastic guide and host. Unfortunately I had less than 24 total hours in Istanbul and—while I don’t usually do guided tours—I wanted to maximize the chance of eating lots of great stuff. The experience felt thoughtfully curated (in terms of route, venues, dishes), but also very flexible and responsive… what did we like best? Let’s get more of that or something else that makes a good complement or comparison. What questions did we have (about the food, but also about life in Türkiye, the city and country’s history, etc. etc.)? Led to a fun and informative discussion. The whole thing felt a bit like being out with a friend’s friend who happens to know and love their city well. We made nine (!) stops. Sweets, savories, meats, veg, drinks, pastry. A lovely view from a rooftop terrace bar and proximity to plenty of lively street life. Obviously given the neighborhood there are some tourists around, but the places we stopped felt locally-oriented and not where I’d ever have discovered or chosen on my own. Like I said, I don’t often do tours. I don’t often write reviews. I’ve already recommended this tour to a friend today and if I can get back through Istanbul I’ll do another Culinary Backstreets tour in a different neighborhood (and would be very happy if it was also one of Başak’s, though she assures me her colleagues are great too).

5.00Basak was a wonderful guide, to the food, the city, the country and actually the region. All subjects covered from the food to cukture, geopolitics and religion. The food was varied and delicious and the venues were perfect and none of them would have been readily accessible on our own. Highly recommend this tour.

5.00Basak was an amazing guide! We had a great time with her and loved all of the food. We would absolutely recommend for anyone interested in learning about Turkish cuisine while exploring the less touristy neighborhoods of Istanbul. Highly recommend.

5.00Altho I actually have lived in Istanbul for more than 50 years, I went along to accompany my sister who was visiting. We went to great places all of which I had never been to. Our guide, Burcu was super! She was knowledgeable and very friendly and intelligent. I highly recommend these tours. It’s the second one I’ve been on in Istanbul . So much fun!!

5.00Terrific evening learning of the unique culture of the Beyoğlu area. Food was outstanding as usual on a Culinary Backstreets tour. In addition, Basak as our host made the entire evening wonderfully fun and enjoyable.

5.00This was a wonderful tour - informative, well-balanced, delicious. It took us to places we certainly would not have found otherwise and give a broad overview of the neighborhood and traditional regional food. We're vegetarian and appreciated the abundance of vegetarian options. Our guide Defne could not have been better.

5.00The tour was just wonderful. Did this with my partner for Xmas eve and we were joined by another lovely couple. Our tour guide, Esin, is the warmest and most knowledgeable person, passionate about the city, its people and its delicious food. Nice duration, speed and variety of dishes. Very friendly to vegetarians. So worth it and such a great way of trying out different dishes at local’s favourite spots. Couldn’t recommend it enough!
