You will hike 2-3 hours along the old Tokaido highway some on cobbled paths and some on forest trails between Hakone Yumoto and Lake Ashi. Some part of this path is off-the-beaten track and we normally have the forest for ourselves. This part of the Hachiri has the best preserved cobbled path and more primitive forests. You will hike past the wood crafting village of Hakone - Hatajuku and we skip the steepest part of the trail by bus and reach a teahouse that has a history of 400 years. After an energising amasake, we will continue our hike to Lake Ashi where if you are lucky, you can have a picture with Mt Fuji and the lake view. The Hakone checkpoint is our last stop where you will understand the significance of Hakone in the history of Japan. At the end of the tour, you can then catch a bus or a ferry (pirate ship) to your next destination at around 1pm.

Akihiro our guide, was so knowledgeable, it was really enjoyable to learn about the area and, the Edo era road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto: Tokaido. The scenery was beautiful. Also we really enjoyed the tea house we stopped at and the museum in its vicinity and of course seeing Mt Fuji. I can only highly recommend this experience. My 7 year old was able to keep up and enjoyed learning about the forest we walked through. Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge with us!

With Aki as guide, my daughter and I enjoyed hiking this beautiful trail. Aki did a wonderful job giving us historical context of this trail, stopping at a village for some barley tea and traditional rice dessert for a quick rest and snack. We also stopped at a woodworking village and had a chance to purchase some beautiful gifts. Aki's knowledge of the trail and its historical importance as well as his ability to adjust the pace of the hike to our comfort makes this a memorable part of our Japan trip.

We loved getting to know the history and beauty of Hakone on this tour. Our guide, Akihiro, is from the area and was so friendly and knowledgeable. As an avid hiker, I view this as more of a regional tour on foot to get to know the area vs. total immersion in nature. Certainly we hiked but only for 2 miles and it’s broken up over many stops. The trail has a lot of cobblestone, so watch your footing. But we love history and loved how the trail was the old highway between Tokyo and Kyoto. We visited a tea house, a wood shop and the Hakone checkpoint at the lake. This was a great tour to do with teenagers. We learned so much from Akihiro!! (He’s a great photographer too; he took so many good pictures of our family.) We had heavy rain so it helped to have multiple stops to get some shelter…the tea house warmed us right up. We had no luck seeing Mt. Fuji once we reached the lake due to the clouds, but I still recommend this tour even in the rain, for the history and beauty of this area. Would be great on a sunny day.
