You will hike 2-3 hours along the old Tokaido highway some on cobbled paths and some on forest trails between Hakone Yumoto and Lake Ashi. Some part of this path is off-the-beaten track and we normally have the forest for ourselves. This part of the Hachiri has the best preserved cobbled path and more primitive forests. You will hike past the wood crafting village of Hakone - Hatajuku and we skip the steepest part of the trail by bus and reach a teahouse that has a history of 400 years. After an energising amasake, we will continue our hike to Lake Ashi where if you are lucky, you can have a picture with Mt Fuji and the lake view. The Hakone checkpoint is our last stop where you will understand the significance of Hakone in the history of Japan. At the end of the tour, you can then catch a bus or a ferry (pirate ship) to your next destination at around 1pm.

Aki is great to do the hiking trail with, he not only does this trip he has many that he can suggest as per your convenience and customise a trip. We choose an Air BNB experience of hiking trail and we totally loved it. Aki was very personalised in his experience and shared great insights in to every thing that Hakone had to offer historically and the importance of the town. He was even able to take us to a tea house that is 400 years old that falls along the hike and make us meet it’s owner, a 13th generation family member. Our daughter loved the experience. It’s about 4 hours of walking which was awesome. Thank you Aki you are a super star in Hakone !

We really enjoyed our morning with Aki. He took us on a fantastic route that included stops in a tea house, a small museum, a woodcraft store/workshop. Our guide Aki was knowledgeable, interesting and proficient in English. He sprinkled in lots of interesting facts about the surroundings. We would highly recommend booking this tour or any other tour offered by coconutshikejapan.com.

Aki’s tour was phenomenal, he is incredibly knowledgeable of not just the area but also the history of why everything on the Old Tokaido Road is the way that it is. The teahouse break was a once in a lifetime experience, the amasake was delicious and the owner was so welcoming and generous!! The experience was an excellent mix of an active but not too tiring hike, with historical information and sightseeing. We could not recommend his tour enough, as he is such a pleasure to spend time with and get a wonderful introduction to Hakone.

My 16 year old son and I did this tour. It was so fantastic. Our guide was such a gem. He had studied in Seattle so his English was excellent. He was so knowledgeable about the area and history. We had a wonderful moment when the local owner of the tea shop gave us blessings for our continued travels. I would absolutely love to take more hikes with this company and guide. Thank you!

Akihiro our guide, was so knowledgeable, it was really enjoyable to learn about the area and, the Edo era road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto: Tokaido. The scenery was beautiful. Also we really enjoyed the tea house we stopped at and the museum in its vicinity and of course seeing Mt Fuji. I can only highly recommend this experience. My 7 year old was able to keep up and enjoyed learning about the forest we walked through. Thank you again for sharing your time and knowledge with us!

Our hike with Aki for our family of 4 was a highlight of our two weeks in Japan. The trail is beautiful and Aki shared just the right amount of history to make it come to life, while helping us enjoy our time in the forest. We loved the beautiful artisan woodworking gift shop (not your typical touristy shop) and seeing how the centuries old craft is still alive. And the tea and mochi break was perfect. Our adult daughters enjoyed chatting with Aki and learning more about life in Japan. A nice bonus were some lovely photos of our family that Aki took and sent to us the next day.

Akiro was an amazing host. His local knowledge of the area and history made the Hachiri trail come alive. Learning about how delicate inlays are made in a local shop was a real treat. Meeting the head of the family that have taken care of travelers for 13 generations an absolute joy.

This hike was an unforgettable experience and the highlight of my trip to Japan! Akihiro was incredibly knowledgeable and kind, making the journey through nature even more enjoyable. After the hike, we relaxed at an onsen, which was the perfect way to end the day—I would absolutely do this hike again!

Aki was a delightful guide, and the hike was lovely and just the right amount of difficulty. We also stopped at a really nice little gift shop and cool old tea house and ended at the Takaido Hakone checkpoint at Lake Ashi which was neat to see. All in all, a very pleasant and well thought out outing!
