This is a hiking tour along a circular, 14 kilometer route. The main attraction of Valencia’s La Serranía region – Roman aqueduct in Chelva, dating more than 2000 years back, nowadays accessible on foot. The aqueduct gives you the opportunity to walk through tunnels carved in rock, cross impressive bridges, and admire unique scenery of the area. Chelva itself and its historical neighborhoods deserves a visit as well. Take a more relaxed stroll through the town, admiring the old Moorish, Jewish, Christian and Arabic constructions.

Calles
After 50 minutes of driving we will get to Calles - the beginning of our trip. First, we'll have a coffee in a local bar and start the hike. The initial 3 kilometers are a very gentle ascent until we get closer to the aqueduct. Here we will start going up the single track trail, while gaining a bit more elevation. Thankfully, this ascent is quite short and soon we will be at the Peña Cortada aqueduct. The path takes us straight through it, as we make our way through the tunnels carved out in rock. Eventually we will get to the bridge - the most impressive part of the aqueduct, which we will cross to get to the other side.
Acueducto de la Pena Cortada
Chelva’s Ruta del Agua or water route, which can be done both from Chelva and from Calles, is a tourist itinerary of great interest, with a circular layout that combines nature and culture in a pleasant walk of approximately two hours with some rest areas along the path. On the way, you will never stop hearing the murmur of the water from numerous springs, sources, ditches and especially the Tuéjar river, which is also sometimes called Chelva river.

A very enjoyable walk led by our super guide, Dmitry, who gave us some interesting information along the route. Everyone in our group of 15 members really enjoyed the experience - the views were amazing and walking across the Roman aqueduct was a special moment for all. Dmitry organised lunch for the group in Restaurant Rincon de los Pacos, Chelva, and the food and service were very good. Our many thanks to Dmitry.

Our circular hiking route today guided by Valencia's best guide, Dmitry with his knowledge, care, organization and professionalism on a beautiful fall day to visit the 2000 year old Roman aqueduct near the charming town of Chelva (only an hour drive from Valencia) makes for a wonderful day hike that is relatively easy for most hikers. I highly recommend the hike and the Valencia Mountain Enthusiasts.

Leaving our hotel from the old part of Valencia,we were picked up by our guide Dmitri and drove to the town of Chelva where we started the walk. Approx 15 km round trip , the walk was moderate with some climbing before reaching the Roman Aqueduct. Take some water and a few snacks as it is quite tiring but worth the visit if you are interested in history. Dimitri was well experienced and informative. Some wonderful views and something different to do during your stay.

We were joined by a sweet stray dog who made the entire hike with us! Walking through the aquaduct was great. Enjoyed the views. Would have given 4-5 stars, but had hoped for more history or information. Emphasis clearly was on hiking. More physically demanding than anticipated, especially for those in 50’s. Would have been too nervous with child who might not be as careful about drop-offs/cliffs.

We have completed two walks with Dmitry, first the day hike to the Roman aqueduct and then a two day hike around Chelva. Both experiences were fantastic with prompt pickup at The Mestalla, comfortable transport to the mountains and great company on the hike and at dinner on the two day hike. The hike locations are absolutely stunning. Highly recommended.

This is a gorgeous hike, through an old town, past the most clear river, over bridges in the mountains, through the old aqueduct tunnels, a split in the rock and finally over the viaduct itself. So much to see!

Dmitry picked me up on time, drove to the hike, we got a coffee, and then started the hike! It was a really fantastic experience. He was very knowledgeable about the area, history, and was nice to talk to. If I come back to Valencia I will definitely book another hike.
