Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
After a quick stop at a roadside rest stop to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Tsumago-juku post town. Here your guide will explain the history and significance of the area and the Nakasendo trail before setting off on our hike.
Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
We will then set off on our hike down the Nakasendo trail—one of five ancient roads connecting the de facto capital of Edo (Tokyo) with other regions in Japan. The trail was most prominent during the Edo era. Today, most of the original Nakasendo has been lost to time or converted into modern highways and railway lines. However, the section of the trail we will hike remains relatively unchanged from the time of the samurai. You will even see segments of the trail with original cobblestone. The hike will also take you by two waterfalls—the perfect place to catch your breath, feel the cool mist on your face, and stop for lunch. Recharged, we will continue our hike past a lone teahouse run by a local volunteer. You’re welcome to stop here for a sip of tea or exchange stories with other travelers.

Must do, if you like hiking. Great trail with a mix of walk through nature and old post towns from the Edo period. Has some elevation and some steep steps. Two water falls and a steady sound of stream flowing as you walk the trail add to the great experience. Our guide, Aemir was very knowledgable about the history and culture of Japan. He met us promptly at the time and place previously communicated to us. He gave us a lot of interesting information of historical and cultural relevance about various places as we were driven to the starting post of Tsumago. He also patiently guided us through the trail while pointing out various highlights. He showed us an excellent place for vegetarian and red bean oyaki - made and sold by an elderly kind and friendly couple. Awesome! Our driver, Iwasaki san, was very respectful and efficient. He added to some of the geographical information when asked and also gave us great suggestions for eateries. Overall a great experience.

Very enjoyed! ❤️ I was looking forward to this hike on the Nakasendo road and the result exceeded expectations. Starting point: Nagoya Station. We rented a hotel in Nagoya for this hike, but you could actually just come from Kyoto because the pick-up point is at Shinkansen Station. Next, by car, about 1.15 before the route starts. The road is 7 km. It runs between two Edo-era post stations. The post offices are still there. There are still people there who care about preserving the settlement. At the first station you can see the structure and setting of the house. Hotels of that era, and of various ranks, have survived. You can buy local food and souvenirs made here. We were very lucky to have a guide: it was very interesting to hear about the history of the station and funny cases involving different houses. Next, camping. A very picturesque road. Beautiful forest, waterfall, bridges over streams, breathtaking mountain views from the slope, huts along the way. In places, an ancient stone road has survived. In the middle of the journey is a tea room where you can enjoy green tea and warm your hands by the hearth. Special thanks to Paula for her great knowledge and interesting conversation, care and for making our trek unforgettable. ❤️ Yes, you can take clothes and change at the end of the route (in case it rains)

Aemir was a knowledgeable and friendly host, and we were lucky to have both a small group of three on the tour, with many laughs shared, and excellent weather. Tomita-san was also a great driver. Would definitely recommend this tour to others. Whilst it's not a super easy hike (some steep, or rocky sections), it is very doable if you have a moderate level of fitness, and there are also options of not hiking or hiking part of it which you can decide on the day even as you're proceeding through the hike. It was very picturesque at this time, with cherry blossoms throughout.

Nice trip in the mountains. Our tour guide Pola was really good at telling stories about the area and waiting for those who were slow to walk. She seemed genuinely happy to be our tour guide.
