Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
After a quick stop at a roadside rest stop to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Tsumago-juku post town. Here your guide will explain the history and significance of the area and the Nakasendo trail before setting off on our hike.
Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
We will then set off on our hike down the Nakasendo trail—one of five ancient roads connecting the de facto capital of Edo (Tokyo) with other regions in Japan. The trail was most prominent during the Edo era. Today, most of the original Nakasendo has been lost to time or converted into modern highways and railway lines. However, the section of the trail we will hike remains relatively unchanged from the time of the samurai. You will even see segments of the trail with original cobblestone. The hike will also take you by two waterfalls—the perfect place to catch your breath, feel the cool mist on your face, and stop for lunch. Recharged, we will continue our hike past a lone teahouse run by a local volunteer. You’re welcome to stop here for a sip of tea or exchange stories with other travelers.

I joined this tour together with my family of four from Singapore. There was another family of 6 arranged together in the same tour. We were picked up in a small passenger bus from Nagoya Station, at the Silver Clock near the Taikō-dori exit. Our guide was Emily, and our driver was Nikishi-san. Emily was a very caring and responsible guide who consistently checked in with us throughout the 3.5-hour hike between Tsumago and Magome. She is also extremely knowledgeable about the history of the Nakasendō and provided helpful historical context for the many interesting sites we visited in both post towns. Overall, I would definitely recommend this tour. Not only does it conveniently take care of transportation from Nagoya to Tsumago, but it also offers a wonderful introduction to the Nakasendō—especially for those considering completing the entire trail in the future.

We loved our hike with Kim and Vincent!!! This is a must do trip if you love the outdoors, want to see more than just the cities and want some great information about the history of this area. The scenery was beautiful! Kim had some much knowledge to share plus they both gave great insight into what it's like living in Japan. Would definitely go on another adventure with these guides and company!

Had a great time hiking the Nakasendo trail with Mir as our guide! It was great to learn about the history of the area, I liked that it was such a small group so we could enjoy our walk and conversations at a leisurely pace. Thank you as well to Asano-san for the smooth car ride to and from Nagoya.

Fabulous tour. Mir was an excellent guide - very knowledgeable, explained things well, patient and took photos of me with my camera which is great when travelling solo. The Nakasendo is a wonderful experience. I’m so glad I did this tour - it is much better to do with a guide to give you interesting information and answer questions. Mr Iwakasi was also a very obliging driver with a great sense of humour. Highly recommended.
