This is a unique hike, unlike most tourist activities, in that you will be accompanied by a local biologist that will assist you in finding and identifying the diverse plants and animals of the region. We will be hiking to the canyon of El Silencio and the spring El Ojo de Agua. Both of these trails are located on private property with limited access within the protected area known as the Reserva Especial de la Biosfera Cajón del Diablo. The microclimate at these locations is wetter and cooler than the surrounding desert creating an oasis with an abundance of native fan palms amongst lush vegetation. The habitat resembles tropical deciduous forests found further south and here many tropical species find their most northern distribution.

This mountainside spring has water year-round and harbors mosses and ferns. In addition, we will see many Mexican fan palms and stunning views of the coastline. 4:30pm-5:30pm: We will reconvene under a shady palapa and enjoy freshly prepared ceviche from locally caught fish served on a tostada with sauces of your choice.

Michael, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and fascinating. We enjoyed learning about the plants, animals, people and history. The hike was not far and the picnic in the desert with ceviche and tostadas was delicious.

The adventure into the desert with Michael was the highlight of our trip to San Carlos and something we could never have completed on our own The desert took on a new dimension because of all the information Michael gave us… from a lion ant to 2000 year old trees and everything in between!! He has so much knowledge and it was such a pleasure to spend a few hours with him in such a wonderful environment the fish tostadas and cold drinks at the end of our trip were perfect Isabella

Take an interesting hike with Mike, an expert and connoisseur of flora and fauna. the experience was unforgettable and allowed me to discover the natural richness of the area. the tour is completely worth it. Mike gave himself the time to stop in certain areas of the tour to show me the variety of plants and wild flowers, explaining their properties and characteristics.

There were five of us in total, including our guide, Mike. He was very informative about the landscape and habitats that we encountered during our hikes! It was very surprising to find some very (temperature) cool spots out in the desert. The foliage is so powerful in that sense. Afterward, we ate some ceviche on tostada shells. It was such a refreshing way to end a hike! The timeline was accurate, too.

What an absolutely amazing experience!!! Michael is so knowledgeable, friendly, funny and easy going. We learned so much as well and saw things that most people have never seen in this region. The hikes he takes you on are not ones others are doing. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. I loved every minute of it. We ended with a little picnic and even that I learned a little secret on how to make ceviche even better. It was such a wonderful treat that my children had bought me as a birthday gift. I can’t thank them and Michael enough for allowing us to see and do something that would never have been on our radar and to learn so much along the way.

I took a tour of the Nacapule Canyon with Mike as my guide both because of the great reviews on TripAdvisor and because he is a biologist. Let me say up front this is a hike that is mostly trail, but does includes clamoring up and down some boulders, so, you would be wise to wear shoes with tread on the soles and the hike is a bit challenging. That said, what an experience this was!! Despite the fact the wider area receives only about 10 inches / 30 cm of rain per year and essentially is desert, the Nacapule Canyon is a micro-climate which collects rain and actually has pools of water. Consequently, the flora includes palms and other deciduous plants which thrive in the canyon, but almost nowhere else. Mike, meanwhile, was awesome. Not only did he take the time to point out specific plants, but he explained what roles they play in the eco-system. One species of palm, for example, forms shirts as the palm fronds die and hang down covering the trunks. Those 'skirts' serve as the home for birds, bats, and other small animals. There were plants with flowers which sustain a particular species of hummingbird. There were pools of water which were some of the few places where Leopard Frogs live. And then, at the end of hike, Mike set up a table. covered it with a table cloth, and served ceviche and drinks !!! Mike was exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. I simply can't say enough good things about him and the hike was amazing in the sense the flora and fauna of the Nacapule Canyon are such a contrast to the surrounding area. This simply was a great, great experience.

Michael supplied knowledge regarding everything we saw. His enthusiasm about the mechanations of mother nature energized us all. Great discussions of native plants, cacti, insects and local culture. Teasing a funnel spider out of it's home, by applying just the right vibrational frequency to the web, was the theatrical highlight! He was able to answer all questions thoroughly. The hike was moderately taxing and I would recommend hiking boots because of the loose rocks, but all in all folks in pretty fair condition should do ok. Great ceviche at the end. One of our favorite tours, mostly because Michael really gave life to the stark beauty.
