Himeji Castle
The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Engyo-ji Temple
Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai. Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026.

We recently enjoyed an excellent half-day tour of Himeji Castle and Koko-en Gardens, guided by Hiromi Mizoi, and it was truly an exceptional experience. There were just two of us on the tour, and Hiromi tailored everything perfectly to our interests—especially my request for deeper historical context. Hiromi’s knowledge of the castle’s long and dramatic history was remarkable. She explained the architecture, defensive design, and restoration with clarity and enthusiasm, bringing the centuries-old structure to life. At Koko-en Gardens, she guided us through each section with fascinating cultural insights that helped us appreciate the careful artistry behind the landscapes. What made the tour even more special was that Hiromi didn’t limit her explanations to the main sights. She also shared the broader history of Himeji City, giving us a fuller sense of how the region developed around the iconic castle. Throughout the tour, she was warm, engaging, and an absolute delight to spend time with. From start to finish, the experience felt personal, informative, and thoughtfully organized. We could not have asked for a more knowledgeable or enjoyable guide. If you want a meaningful, customizable introduction to Himeji’s history and culture, touring with Hiromi is an excellent choice.

On a wet day it was still very enjoyable to visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden. Yama was a wonderful guide who was keen to share his knowledge, taking many photos for us. A visit to Nadagiku Sake bro was a great way to end our visit. Yama was also more than helpful to navigate our way back to Osaka. Arigato Yama.

We had a great tour to Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden with Hiromi! Her English is very good. She is knowledgeable and tells interesting stories about the castle and local life. She paced the tour well and gracefully made time for my photo taking. The castle is spectacular and the garden is beautiful and serene. It was a great day!

Norio picked us up from himeji station on time. In fact he contacted me well in advance and informed us about the meeting point. Showed us around the complete itinerary of castle and the adjoining park. He also planned breaks for food and photos. Explained the details of palace and the dynasties that ruled the area during the historic period.

Norio guided us through Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden. He met us at the train station and helped us negotiate the ticket gates when a few in our group had left their exit tickets in the lockers. Prior to the tour, he promptly answered several questions we had by e-mail. His spoken English had an accent, but he would repeat himself so that we understood. He was very informative and we enjoyed our tour.

This is a fabulous tour with Hiromi san. My family all enjoyed the trip, though they barely speak English. Through my translation, everyone has a glimpse of the tremendous history of this incredible castle. It is the lucky castle, and I sincerely hope the luck continues. Thanks again for Hiromi san's excellent explanation and the perception she provided as a local born and raised here. 10 of 10, see you next time, Himeji castle!

The breathtaking Himeji Castle comes to life with the expert help of Hiromi san. Be that the explanation of the intricate castle layout, the history of the castle and the city it is located in, or simply talking about Japan in general - the tour was extremely enjoyable and memorable.
