Himeji Castle
The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Engyo-ji Temple
Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai. Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026.

Yama san was a fantastic guide for a trip into Himeji Castle and Koko-en Gardens, plus a local shrine. The tour was even better than I expected, way better than if I’d just wandered around on my own. He was very knowledgeable about all sorts of details in the Castle, history, and current culture in the area. We had a lively time and Yama san had some great suggestions for me to seek out unique dinner experiences and locally made souvenirs. He even helped me expand my Japanese vocabulary! I would definitely recommend a tour with Yama san to anyone.

We had a wonderful tour of Himeji Castle. Our guide, Yama-san, was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so much fascinating history about the castle and its past. The castle itself is stunning, and the surrounding garden is equally beautiful. It was a fantastic experience, and we truly enjoyed it.

My boyfriend and I wanted a guide to learn about Himeji, and Yama-san did not disappoint. He was funny, knowledgeable (and if there was a question he wasn’t sure about he’d find the answer), and an overall pleasure of a guide. He took us to the castle, Koko-en gardens and a shrine, and gave us so many extra fun tidbits of info you’d only get from a guide. He even took us to a beautiful viewpoint even when we were tight on time. Highly recommend getting to know Himeji with Yama-san.

I had a very enjoyable tour of Himeji Castle with Harumi - she was very knowledgable, good with english and super friendly. There were a lot of interesting details that I would have missed for sure if I went by myself, so I am glad that I was able to have this experience. Highly recommend and I would like to do another one if I am lucky enough to get the chance to!

We recently enjoyed an excellent half-day tour of Himeji Castle and Koko-en Gardens, guided by Hiromi Mizoi, and it was truly an exceptional experience. There were just two of us on the tour, and Hiromi tailored everything perfectly to our interests—especially my request for deeper historical context. Hiromi’s knowledge of the castle’s long and dramatic history was remarkable. She explained the architecture, defensive design, and restoration with clarity and enthusiasm, bringing the centuries-old structure to life. At Koko-en Gardens, she guided us through each section with fascinating cultural insights that helped us appreciate the careful artistry behind the landscapes. What made the tour even more special was that Hiromi didn’t limit her explanations to the main sights. She also shared the broader history of Himeji City, giving us a fuller sense of how the region developed around the iconic castle. Throughout the tour, she was warm, engaging, and an absolute delight to spend time with. From start to finish, the experience felt personal, informative, and thoughtfully organized. We could not have asked for a more knowledgeable or enjoyable guide. If you want a meaningful, customizable introduction to Himeji’s history and culture, touring with Hiromi is an excellent choice.

On a wet day it was still very enjoyable to visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden. Yama was a wonderful guide who was keen to share his knowledge, taking many photos for us. A visit to Nadagiku Sake bro was a great way to end our visit. Yama was also more than helpful to navigate our way back to Osaka. Arigato Yama.

We had a great tour to Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden with Hiromi! Her English is very good. She is knowledgeable and tells interesting stories about the castle and local life. She paced the tour well and gracefully made time for my photo taking. The castle is spectacular and the garden is beautiful and serene. It was a great day!
