Himeji Castle
The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Engyo-ji Temple
Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai. Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026.

Our guide, Yama-san was a wonderful host. We corresponded a few weeks before the tour and agreed on an itinerary. We ended up using our 4 hours with him by visiting the Engyoji temple complex in Mount Shosha followed by a taxi ride to/a quick tour of the Koko-en gardens, right next to Himeji Castle. We then visited the castle on our own, which tbh, I’d recommend others to do too. The temple complex in the mountains was truly breath-taking!

Yama was an excellent guide with which to visit Himeji Castle, Koko-en and Sosha Shrine. He has a lot of energy and a multitude of knowledge. Himeji Castle is a marvel, absolutely stunning visually with an interesting history. Although not listed as one of Japane's top gardens, Koko-en is lovely and contains all the elements of garden design you could wish for. I definitely recommend visiting Himeji even if, like us, you are enroute somewhere else but do see if Yama is available to guide you on your visit.

Our guide Hiromi was absolutely fantastic. We had been in touch over WhatsApp for a few weeks before the tour, and she was always quick to respond and very helpful. On the day of the tour she met us at Himeji Station holding a sign for us—such a thoughtful and welcoming touch. We spent more than four hours exploring both the castle grounds and the castle itself. Hiromi’s knowledge and explanations added so much depth to the experience. She pointed out countless details we never would have noticed on our own, especially the intentional defensive design of the castle. Learning how nearly every step of the approach was engineered to slow down or confuse attackers was fascinating, and it completely changed the way we saw the site. After the castle, she continued walking with us through the garden and shared an impressive amount of information about the plants, flowers, and trees there as well. It felt like having a true museum-quality guide the entire time. Hiromi was incredibly kind, warm, and pleasant to spend the day with. If you want a deeper, more informative experience rather than just walking through on your own, I highly recommend booking this tour - especially if you can get Hiromi as your guide. She made the whole visit unforgettable. ❤️

We had an incredible 6‑hour tour of Himeji Castle, Koko‑en Garden, and Hiromine Shrine on 6th March 2026, guided by the wonderful Hiromi Mioi. She is truly an exceptional guide—humble, warm, and deeply knowledgeable. Hiromi explained the history, culture, traditions, rules, and etiquettes of Japan with such clarity and passion that it made every moment meaningful. Her warm personality and thoughtful approach made us feel comfortable throughout the tour. Not only is she extremely knowledgeable, but she is also incredibly kind, patient, and attentive to every detail. Thanks to her, we enjoyed a fulfilling and memorable experience that we will cherish for a long time. We highly recommend Hiromi to anyone visiting Himeji. She is an outstanding guide, and we cannot thank her enough for everything she did to make our day so special.

We had a wonderful time with Yama-san today. We explored Himeji castle and the gardens as well as Nadagiku Sake Brewery. Yama-san was so wonderful and knowledgeable throughout our tour. He knows all the history and takes great photos for you so you don’t miss out on group shots. We wish we were staying longer to do another of his tours, like sake tasting. Look forward to our next visit and tour! Thank you!!
