Himeji Castle
The castle was registered as world heritage in 1993. The castle is known for its specific architecture. The construction of the castle would represent sophistication of their defence system and political power. This was the tallest castle in Japan which meant that this castle represented once the highest power and sophistication of military power in the samurai period. In 1346 Akamatsusadanori started to construct the castle during the civilisation war in Japan many other people took over the castle after that. During the time of under different ownership the castle changed its shape but the Castle we can see today was the same shape as 1909. End of samurai rule in Japan, the owner of the castle gave the castle to the new-formed government. After that the government decided to use the castle as educational and historical display purpose. Because of that reason, the castle is now open to the public.
Engyo-ji Temple
Engyo-ji is Tendai sect temple on the top of the mount Shosha. The mountain is located the north side of the city. This is a very authentic temple which is constructed in 970. It has a resemblance of the very famous temple in Kyoto, which also constructed on the side of the mountain. The wooden construction of the main building and dining hall were registered as one of Japanese culture heritage. Also, it was one of the filming locations of Tom Cruise’s Last Samurai. Mt. Shosya Ropeway to access Engyo-ji temple will be suspended due to the annual maintenance from February 5, 2026 to March 18, 2026.

5.00Yama-San gave us an excellent tour to the castle as well as the Koko-en garden. He responded very well to our pace and drew our attention to many small details. His tip. for the best coffee in Himeji after the tour was also perfect.

5.00What a great experience in Himeji! Our knowledgeable guide Hiromi san did an outstanding job not only listing the facts, but also wrap the entire castle tour into a story, from a fictional “invader’s” point of you. The visit to the adjacent garden is a must do to nature lovers, gardeners, or anyone looking for a little peace. It is a place you wish you had in your own backyard… and here again, Hiromi san made sure that we see the last cherry tree blossom, and hear about the plants and the many different Japanese garden styles. We have booked many guided trips before, but thanks to Hiromi san, this (more than) half-day tour was far the best - thank you for allowing us to learn about Japanese culture!!

5.00Chiyuki was such a fantastic guide. Her English is clear and understandable, and she is extremely knowledgeable about the castle and surrounding areas. She was also a great conversationalist, we talked about many things aside from the castle itself! Chiyuki met us at the train station and showed us the way in, swinging through some local shopping areas to point out some things to try and look at on our way out. The tour itself was great, and she was very skilled at moving us around the massive 20+ people tour groups that plague most of the sites you visit in Japan. We definitely felt like we got the most out of our money and time with Chiyuki and had a most enjoyable experience during Sakura at Himeji. Go this route. Don’t waste your day with a massive tour! Chiyuki is the best!!!

5.00A fantastic private tour of Himeji Castle and Engyoji Temple. Chiyuki was great company, insightful, friendly, and tailored the experience just right. I learned so much and saw details I would have otherwise missed. The pace was perfect. Absolutely worth it!
