Atomic Bomb Dome
The A-Bomb Dome, or Genbaku Dome, is one of Hiroshima's most iconic and haunting landmarks, preserved as a stark reminder of the devastating atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. Originally the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, this structure was one of the few buildings near the epicenter to survive the blast, though it was severely damaged. Its skeletal remains have since been carefully maintained as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing the resilience of Hiroshima’s people and their commitment to peace. Visitors to the A-Bomb Dome can walk around the structure, observing its preserved state, and reflect on the immense destruction caused by nuclear weapons. It stands as a powerful testament to the horrors of war and a call to action for global nuclear disarmament, offering a profound and sobering experience for all who visit.

We met our guide Kazuko at our hotel. She was extremely nice and told us a lot of interesting stories about Miyajima Island, the Itsukushima Shrine, Otorii Gate and after we went back to Hiroshima of course a lot about the Atomic bomb Memorial Site. For lunch she showed us a place with a Sushi carousel which was great fun, especially for the kids. Kazuko was - as said before - extremely nice and knowledgeable. It was - if you are able to be say that about such an emotionally moving place - a great experience. We can highly recommend Kazuko!

Our tour guide, Kazuko, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. We travelled for the day from Tokyo on the Shinkansen train. Before our journey began, we received a What’s App message welcoming us and confirming our meeting plans. We were met at the train station as planned and we shared a very engaging day together. First, we took the ferry to Miyajima Island to see the Sika deer, the beautiful Itsukushima Shrine and Torii Gate. Then we travelled to the Peace Park to experience the history and remember the lives lost. Walking around the grounds, we spent time at key areas. What impressed me was the history and customs shared with us at places like the Peace Bell, the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound, Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims, the Peace Flame, and the Atomic Bomb Dome. We spent time at the Peace Memorial Museum. We were moved with Kazuko sharing her mother’s story from when she was only 15 years old that day. A reflective and powerfully moving day but one filled also with hope for the future. Highly recommend this tour.

John has vast knowledge about Japanese history and the area of Miyajima and Hiroshima. We appreciated his meeting us at the end of our shuttle bus from our port, and taking us to the streetcar and then the ferry to Miyajima, as well as accompanying us back to the shuttle. We felt secure in navigating our way around. He was able to answer all our questions in depth.
