Hobbiton Movie Set
Hobbiton Movie Set 'The Shire' is home of Frodo, Bilbo and many other wonderful Hobbit's. This is the main destination of this tour. Admission is excluded - as we are unable to source tickets for cruise ship passengers. We will be at Hobbiton for approximately 3.25 hours where you will experience a magical 2.5 hour guided tour of The Shire, Hobbit homes and The Green Dragon Inn.
McLaren Falls Park
This picturesque park really is a delightful stop during your Tauranga and Hobbiton Journey. This wonderful lake captures the true beauty of Tauranga with native trees, birds, ducks, swans and the occasional sheep. Home to Trout and even glow worms for evening kayak trips this park is something special. Incorporating McLaren Falls this a wonderful stop where you can really experience New Zealand's diverse architecture and potentially get your feet wet in our beautiful clean waters.

5.00This was one of the best excursions we have done as cruise ship passengers. Alan met us right outside the port and got us loaded on the bus. He was a great tour guide- very knowledgeable, funny, and loves his city. The snacks (Amanda’s brownies!!) were great, and the sights were gorgeous. Back in plenty of time for the ship.

5.00We had a great day tour with Alan, around Tauranga, Mclaren Falls and Hobbiton. Alan shared lots of really interesting and funny stories, as well as lovely home made brownies. Hobbiton was fabulous and the newly opened Hobit home was magical. Fabulous trip and guide would highly recommend.

5.00Allen was a great driver and guide. Exceeded our expectations. He really took care of our group of 17. The van was comfortable!. It was a unique and wonderful experience at the Hobbiton Movie Set! With a clear, sunny day, our pictures turned out amazing with the scenic backdrops. The stop at McLaren Falls was a nice break on the drive back to the port. We enjoyed this excursion!
A fascinating excursion for LotR or Hobbit fans, ideal for cruise-ship passengers

4.00Although this particular excursion is primarily designed for passengers on cruise ships calling at Tauranga Port, it is accessible to non-cruisers, but may not be the cheapest way to go to Hobbiton. Excursioners are picked up at the gate of the Tauranga Passenger Port in Mount Maunganui and taken directly to Hobbiton by minibus, the journey taking between 60 and 90 minutes. Once at Shires Rest, the "staging area" for Hobbiton, the coach-driver will provide the required tickets for entry and will indicate which timed-tour the excursioner is to attend. Then a Hobbiton bus will take a party down to the film set with a knowledgeable guide. The guide will shepherd the party around the set over the next 90-100 minutes with regular pauses where various aspects of the building of Hobbiton, how certain effects in the films were achieved, and interesting background stories from the films. The tour culminates in a visit to the Green Dragon pub for a complimentary alcoholic drink of Stout, Amber Ale or Cider or a non-alcoholic Ginger Ale. It is also possible to purchase very reasonably priced foodstuffs such as a steak and ale pie (good), a cheese scone (Excellent) and some cake choices. Then the bus will return to Shires Rest which provides access to a shop selling a range of LotR and Hobbit merchandise and a cafe serving a truly brilliant lamb and Rosemary pie. The original minibus then leaves Hobbiton and travels to a small park near a waterfall where excursioners can stretch their legs, get some photos and have snacks. The minibus then returns the party to the original pick-up point approximately 8 hours after the original departure. Both of our guides, (the minubus driver and the guide within Hobbiton), were engaging, knowledgeable and provided numerous interesting anecdotes. There are cheaper ways to take an excursion to Hobbiton, but these will generally require considerably more forward-planning and access to Hobbiton via these cheaper methods usually sell out many days or even weeks ahead.

5.00I had an absolutely fantastic time on the Hobbiton tour! The moment you step onto the set, it feels like you’ve walked straight into Middle-earth. The attention to detail is incredible—from the charming hobbit holes to the lush gardens—and the guides bring the whole place to life with fun stories and behind-the-scenes insights. The Green Dragon Inn was a perfect finishing touch. A magical, beautifully run tour that every fan (and even non-fan!) will love. Highly recommended!
