Ming Tombs (Ming Shishan Ling)
The Ming Tombs, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, are the most extensive imperial burial complex of China’s Ming Dynasty and a treasure trove of 15th-century art and architecture, and this tour is designed to help you deeply unlock the history of the Ming Dynasty and the stories behind these tombs. Your day will start with your guide and driver picking you up from your hotel; during the drive to the Ming Tombs, the guide will share interesting insights and knowledge about the Ming Dynasty, giving you a preliminary understanding of the era before you arrive. Upon arrival, your exploration will begin with the Sacred Road–also known as "the road leading to heaven," this path was once used for imperial processions to the tombs, and along it, you’ll see a row of exquisite stone statues; the guide will walk you through the stories and symbolic meanings behind each stone statue, letting you grasp the imperial etiquette and cultural connotations of the Ming Dynasty.
Dingling Underground Palace
After the Sacred Road, you’ll head to Dingling Tomb, the only underground imperial palace in the Ming Tombs open to the public; first, you’ll visit the museums on both sides of the tomb entrance, where you can view cultural relics unearthed from Dingling, such as imperial costumes and daily utensils, and then follow the guide down into the underground palace – here, you’ll see the original burial chambers, the stone coffins of Emperor Wanli and his two empresses, and gain a close-up understanding of the Ming Dynasty’s imperial funeral system.

This tour was excellent in showing us the major locations in the Ming tombs. The information Sherry our guide shared was very detailed and we learned not only about the Ming tombs but also about Chinese history and culture too. Wang our driver was great and transported us between locations smoothly and quickly. And we loved the Tesla with the gull wing doors and water and beer refreshments. Sherry asked us if we wanted a bonus stop at a jade factory- which we took advantage of. She asked if we would also like to stop at a location for tea making. We decided not to do this as we were tired but certainly appreciated the offer and flexibility to add to our Ming tombs tour. Overall I highly recommend this tour and the services of Sherry and Wang.

Our guide Lily was the most knowledgeable out of all our guides we used in one week in Beijing. She tells you the story and not just facts. She gave us a lot of information on tombs we visited. There was no need to rush (like with group tour) and we stopped a lot to take photos. The underground tombs are very impressive. The shape of halls inside is similar to some egyptian tombs but we think on bigger scale. The size of some stone blocks is just unbelievable. We also were lucky to follow the traditional walk with god of wealth and luck. Lily translated for us everything they spoke during this performance. Our driver was brilliant and it took just over one hour to get there and then back. Thank you!

Allen was a great guide and gave us an engaging morning at the Ming Tombs and Sacred Path. He provided context to what we were seeing which made the experience more enjoyable. Both Allen and our driver were very professional and I would recommend this tour.
