The ‘Introduction To Rock Climbing’ is our most popular trip. You get the opportunity to experience outdoor rock climbing in a safe and fun way, focusing on maximum time actually climbing, whilst learning safe practices and good technique along the way. It is ideal for those who have never climbed before, or only on an indoor wall.
The climbing can range from easy to challenging and we keep the group sizes small to ensure everyone has a great time and is challenged at their own level. Our qualified instructors/guides will take you to the most suitable venue in the beautiful Matukituki Valley near Wanaka.

Children must be accompanied by an adult
Minimum age is 4 years. For younger children, contact us to discuss their suitability
You must be able to safely wear a harness and helmet
Operates in most weather conditions, please dress appropriately
If cancelled due to very poor weather, you will be given the option of an alternative date, an indoor climbing experience or a refund

Meet your Guide at Basecamp Wanaka Climbing Centre, or we can pick you up from your Wanaka accommodation if you wish. We'll begin with an introduction to climbing, and you'll be outfitted with all the equipment you will require. Your guide will take you to the most suitable climbing location for the group, choosing from a range of climbs which are great for absolute beginners, or for climbers seeking more of a challenge. Enjoy the sun, the mountain views, and the company of your group as you climb together on the doorstep of Mt Aspiring National Park. We'll spend the maximum possible time on the rock, so you get real value from your half day with us, and plenty of quality interaction with your local guide, and new friends! After 3-3.5 hours of fun, we head back to the vehicle, and we return you to our meeting point, for a well-deserved rest.

5.00This was an awesome experience. I’m just getting into rock climbing, and my guide (Issac is what I think is name was, but I’m not good with names) was very supportive in trying to find routes that were not too easy for me to climb, but also not impossible. The whole experience was done very well; all the gear was included and was in good shape, the guide was easygoing and personable, they made sure you knew what was going on, and also helped out with spotting holds when things got difficult. There was also no waiting around, I arrived and they got right to getting my kit sized and out to the rock face. Issac also gave tips on how to get into the sport and gain more experience in the future. Not to mention that the views are pretty amazing and the area around Wanaka is one of the most scenic in NZ. I would just like note that this is real rock climbing, so it is a pretty physical endeavor. While the guides do have ways of making it a lot easier on newcomers, like myself, there is a limit and one should be in reasonably good shape before trying this. Definitely recommend and will likely do this again if I end up back in the area.

5.00My wife and I had a great time booking with Basecamp Adventures! We first booked a mountaineering track, and had such a great time that we ended up booking a rock climbing session later in our trip! Our guide, Stevo, was awesome! Super knowledgeable and enjoyable to be around. He didn’t just guide, but he elevated our experience and made it one to remember. They tours we booked are definitely the type of thing that defined our trip and created lasting memories for my wife and I. Additionally, on the practical side, they had great communication and were easy to book with. I cannot recommend them enough!

5.00My wife and I went multi pitching. Despite the bad weather we were fortunate to be in touch with Loz who is flexible and super nice. Beginners, don't be afraid, Loz made us confident in our abilities. We definitely got type 1 and type 2 fun :)
