The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a 21-arch, concrete railway bridge in the Scottish Highlands, known for its elegant curve and breathtaking scenery we will make a stop here if taking the ferry to Skye from Mallaig. *Weather and availability permitting. Alternatively we will take the Skye Bridge or Glenelg Ferry if the Mallaig ferry is unavailable.
Old Inverlochy Castle
We will then make our way up to back to Fort William stopping for photos at the ruined Inverlochy Castle which is one of the best preserved ruins from the 12 century. Burnt to its current state by Robert the Bruce one of Scotlands most famous Kings in 1306.
Sligachan Old Bridge
Today you will experience the magnificent Isle of Skye voted the 4th best island by National Geographic. What better way to enjoy it with a guide who grew up on the Island. We will have our first stop at Sligachan where we can marvel at the Black & Red Cuillin Mountains. Possibly wash our faces in the river Sligachan (Legend says its gives eternal beauty!) & your guide will tell you about the famous mountains and where the name Cuillin comes from.
Fairy Pools
We will then drive the short distance to the Fairy Pools where there is the option to hike up to the main pools and capture that spectacular photo which has made the Fairy Pools so popular. We will learn about some of the clan rivalry on the island and some of the battles. One fought here at the site of the pools called the battle of the one eyed lady.
Talisker Distillery
After a hike the best way to relax is with a "Wee Dram" so we can visit the famous Talisker Whisky Distillery for a taster if you like or just explore the distillery visitor centre which has just completed a huge renovation. Talisker is one of the most prestigious distilleries in Scotland and "officially' opened in 1830.
Portree
We will lunch in the capital of the island Portree just a small town of 3000 it has lots to offer in terms of views, shopping and eateries. The Harbour designed by Thomas Telford makes a great photo with the colourful houses, church and the lump (The Meall) in the background.
Kilt Rock
After lunch in Portree we will complete the impressive Trotternish Ridge circuit taking in famous sights such as the Old Man of Storr & Mealt Falls which is an impressive Sea waterfall with Kilt Rock as its back drop. This area has had various Dinosaur footprints found and there is even a Dinosaur museum in the nearby village of Staffin.
Quiraing
The Quiraing is Britains largest landslide and the landscape in this area is like no other you will find in the United Kingdom. Used as a film location for many movies including Transformers, BFG & Stardust to name a few you will see why they chose to film in this magical area.
Fairy Glen
We will end the day in Fairy Glen which has a fairy like feel to it. Spelt Faerie Glen it is full of cone shaped grassy hills and interesting rock formations one being called Castle Euan as it looks like an old ruined castle. Your guide will tell you about some stories of the fairy folklore on Skye and where the connection to Fairies and Skye comes from.
Isle of Skye
End your day exploring the Isle of Skye.
Loch Coruisk
This extra day on Skye gives us the opportunity to get to one of the finest Lochs and views in all of Scotland, Loch Coruisk. The drive over to Elgol is truly stunning and we are rewarded with our efforts with the view from Elgol Pier with a different aspect of the Black Cuillins. There is the option to book on to the Misty Isle boat cruise which will give us access to Loch Coruisk and also likely we will spot some marine life. The Elgolian Langoustine roll is one to try if we are lucky enough to time it right with the local seafood shack. *Sailings are weather dependent and availability at the time of booking
Dunvegan Castle & Gardens
Home to the Clan Macleod, Dunvegan Castle is one the greatest Hebridean castles and the only Highland fortress to have been continuously occupied by the same family for 800 years. We will have plenty of time to stop here so the castle visit is not rushed and there is time to enjoy the award winning Castle Gardens. This can be the lunch stop depending on time.
Neist Point
Neist Point is the most Westerly point of Skye and is breathtaking in its beauty. It is a hike down to the Lighthouse but totally worth it for the views and the chance to see how the Lighthouse keepers would have lived living in such a remote part of Skye. Supplies were landed by boat and there is an aerial cableway used to take goods from the road to the lighthouse and cottages. The Basalt cliffs are busy with sea birds and looking to the sea we may see whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks if we are lucky.
Skye Weavers
You may have heard of Harris Tweed but Skye has its own version made locally and to traditional processes. You may get the chance to pedal the bicycle powered loom and learn about how the products are woven all on site.
Dun Beag
Dun Beag Broch is an Iron Age fort of over 2000 years old. There are over 700 of them in Scotland and this one is not to be missed. There were constructed of an inner and an outer wall and were said to be the dwellings of wealthy heads of family.
Eilean Donan Castle
We leave Skye behind & still have so much to see as we travel South. Our first stop of the day will be the "biscuit tin castle" Scotlands most photographed Castle Eilean Donan. This has featured in movies such as Bridesmaids and Highlander and is a popular location for those wanting to tie the knot.
Loch Ness
We will arrive at Loch Ness just an hours drive from Eilean Donan at a little town called Fort Augustus where there is an option to go onto the water and do the cruise on the Loch. Loch Ness is one of the most famous of all the Lochs in Scotland with nearly double the volume of water than all of the Lakes in England & Wales combined and is rumoured to have a famous resident in the waters called "Nessie" We will have time to do the cruise and explore the town which will also be the lunch stop of the day.
Pitlochry
After Loch Ness we will drive towards Spean Bridge and the Ben Nevis viewpoint (Commando Memorial) taking in the grandeur off the Nevis Range before heading East and South via the Laggan road entering into the Cairngorm National Park. Gradually making our way through the Cairngorms down towards "Big Tree Country" Perthshire passing by Dalwhinnie Whisky Distillery & Blair Castle. We will have a final stop of the tour in the beautiful town of Pitlochry which is the gateway between Highlands and Lowlands made famous through Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who would regularly visit.
Forth Road Bridge
As we make our way back to Edinburgh we will cross over the famous forth road bridge and the Firth of Forth which has three famous bridges one being a World Uniseco heritage site (Forth Railway Bridge) The tour will end at your chosen destination.

We had the absolute pleasure of taking the 4-day Isle of Skye tour with MacLeods Heilan Tours, and it was the highlight of our entire trip to Scotland. From start to finish, everything was perfectly planned, informative, and wonderfully personal. Our guide (and now friend!) John was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and deeply passionate about the history, culture, and beauty of the Highlands. He brought every location to life with stories, legends, and local insight we never would have discovered on our own. From ancient castles and breathtaking glens to hidden waterfalls and rugged coastlines, every stop felt like something out of a storybook. Skye itself is beyond words — dramatic cliffs, fairy pools, and stunning seascapes around every bend. We never felt rushed and had plenty of time to explore, take photos, and just soak it all in. John made sure that we got to see and do everything on our list that was outside the normal tour stops. From the Glenelg Ferry to Trumpan Church, our family loved it all. Special shout-out for the well-timed stops for food and coffee — everything was comfortable, clean, and well chosen. If you’re looking for an authentic, engaging, and unforgettable Highland experience, look no further than MacLeods Heilan Tours. We’re already dreaming of our return to Scotland.

John was absolutely the best!!! We could not have asked for a nicer, friendlier, and knowledgable guide to tour us around the Isle of Skye. Over the course of four days, he was always on time with a smile on his face and passion for the country he grew up in. He was definitely a highlight to our visit to Scotland!!!! He took us to beautiful natural areas as well as "touristy" highlights. Always receptive to the desires of the group! Cannot recommend him highly enough! Thanks John!!!!!

Our recent four-day tour of the Isle of Skye was nothing short of spectacular, and much of that magic can be attributed to our fantastic guide, John. From the moment we boarded the comfortable vehicle, we knew we were in for an unforgettable experience. The booking process was impressively simple, allowing us to focus on our excitement rather than logistics. A few clicks and we were all set to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland. The tour company made everything seamless, ensuring we felt confident, secure, and ready for our adventure. As we traveled through the stunning Highlands, we greatly appreciated the comfort of our vehicle. It provided a smooth ride as we navigated the winding roads, leaving us to soak in the ever-changing scenery without distraction. John made sure to stop frequently at viewpoints, ensuring we did not miss any opportunities for breathtaking photos and memories. Words and photos cannot adequately capture the splendor of the Scottish Highlands. Each location felt like stepping into a postcard, but even those images pale in comparison to the real thing. The air was crisp, the colors more vibrant, and the landscapes more majestic than we had ever imagined. The tour took us to some of the Highlands' most iconic spots. The Old Man of Storr was nothing short of a fairytale, its towering rock formations offering a dramatic backdrop against the sweeping vistas. The Fairy Pools were dazzling with their crystal-clear waters, and it provided us with a whole new level of nature’s artistic brilliance. Neist Point Lighthouse stood proudly on the rugged cliffs, its isolation enhancing the sense of adventure we felt. Dunvegan Castle and its lush gardens provided a glimpse into Scotland's rich history, and we wandered the grounds, mesmerized by the beauty surrounding us. John’s stories and insights brought each of these locations to life, deepening our appreciation for the history and culture of the area. His enthusiasm was infectious, his knowledge vast, and it was clear he loved sharing his homeland with us. Lastly, it cannot go without mentioning one of the most delightful surprises of our journey—the adorable Highland cows and fluffy sheep dotting the landscape. The Highland cows, with their long, shaggy coats and gentle expressions, continuously highlighted the experience. Watching them graze peacefully against the backdrop of the rugged hills brought a sense of charm and whimsy to our travels. But I cannot forget about the adorable sheep! Their playful antics added to the idyllic scenery, making it feel like a scene straight out of a storybook. Overall, this tour was an experience beyond words. The combination of stunning landscapes, comfortable travel, and John’s exceptional guidance created a journey that we will cherish forever. If you are considering a trip to Scotland, do not hesitate to explore the Isle of Skye with John. His knowledge base is vast, his personality absolutely fantastic, and his flexibility to customize the journey is unmatched. This is an adventure that promises to leave you in awe of nature’s beauty, and the enchanting spirit of Scotland.

We miss John. After spending 4 four wonderful days with John driving us around to amazing spots, we grew very close. John is kind, fun, genuine, considerate, and a super informative guide. His Mercedes van was very comfortable and driven with care. And, for me a "planner", he was quick to reply to my numerous emails, with detailed information. John wore a different kilt every day and so many random tourists wanted a picture with him (which, of course, he pleasantly complied). You will enjoy any time with John!

John Sheedy was born and raised on the Isle of Skye, and his soul has never really left. He knows the land as well as the people, many on a first-name basis. We could not have had a better escort for our tour of the Highlands. Since he is enlarging his business with other tour guides with similar qualifications, we whole-hearedly recommend MacLeod Heilan Tours.

In early April my group of 3 (including a special needs adult) had a great 4 day tour of Skye and beyond with John! Of course the Scotland weather is out of his hands but everything else is well looked after! He happily customized our tour to include an overnight in Inverness and literally adjusted our itinerary in real-time to best take advantage of the variations in the weather. John is one of those rare people you will meet who possesses the 3 E's: Energy, Excitement and Enthusiasm! He's always ready for anything. The natural beauty in Scotland is amazing and should be experienced. This tour is actually better than advertised. The van is roomy, clean and comfortable. I could continue on but in summary we very much enjoyed our private tour and would highly recommend it!

Fantastic 4 day trip with John who personally drove and guided me. He gave me several options on a daily basis which allowed me to make informed decisions on the itinerary for a given day. I would strongly recommend John to all travellers and particularly to those, who like me, value flexibilty. Overall a great trip despite the weathers best attempt to spoil the party. Hope John will be available when i comeback to fill the missing pieces of my Scotland trip.

Highly recommend John and his company for any scottish trip since he personally guides and drives his guests. He suggests and judiciously explains what he feels is the best itinerary but the guest always makes the final informed decision. The 4 day itinerary we came up with was magical despite Scotland’s infamous rainy weathers best attempt to spoil it. Four days was in fact a bit too short since i didnt want to rush things and will certainly be back to cover the bases i missed. Thanks John
