Topping just above 3,000m, Jebel Shams (‘Mountain of the Sun’) is the highest peak on the Arabian Peninsula. It is not uncommon to see snow and hail in the winter months, and in the summer months is still prone to inclement weather. Within this environment is what is commonly called Oman ‘Grand Canyon’, a majestic semi-circular canyon, mid-way around the rim of which is the ‘Balcony Walk. Although generally classified as ‘moderate’ in intensity, the drops can be sheer so walkers should be comfortable with heights. On the return trip to Muscat the 400-year old village of Al Hamra offers some glimpses into the traditional village living of years gone by.

We will drive directly from Muscat to Jebel Shams, taking the twisting turning road to the very top plateau
Wadi Ghul - Oman's Grand Canyon
We will stop at the top of the plateau and look down and across the Grand Canon. Time to enjoy the cool breeze and take photos Then we will drive down and begin the hike around the rim of the Grand Canyon, to the abandoned village, and return.

5.00Great experience! Guide was good, views were amazing. Would highly recommend doing the Balcony Walk. Good shoes or boots are recommended, but at no point is the path so narrow that you'd be scared. It is a gentle downhill slope on the way out, but that means a steady uphill climb on the way back - but if you're moderately fit you'll be ok.

5.00The hike is an absolute highlight. At the end of the hike, a little hidden above the path, it has a lake. It is worth the 15 minutes more to hike. There and back, the hike takes about three hours.

5.00As the name suggests, this is another exciting trek that offers an excellent vantage point from the narrow balcony-style ledge looking down into Oman’s incredible canyon. Undoubtedly, Oman is a geological paradise with diverse rock forms cut over millennia into various landforms. And for all outdoor enthusiasts like us, the W6 hiking trail is always a highlight on the Oman itinerary for all the breathtaking views it offers. Here, the canyon plunges dramatically down below while the high edges give a perspective that we’re on top of the world! If not on top of the world, pun intended, at least, we were very close to the Arabian summit. The W6 hike also led us to a cave, a natural pool, and an abandoned village situated between the gorges of the canyon. However, the most stunning aspect of the trek is curving along the inside of the canyon wall on a ledge overlooking the canyon from the top of 1,000 m-high cliffs. With little elevation gain and clear signs, this trek takes up to four hours, depending on how hooked we get with the stunning views.
