Discover the Spiritual Heart of Old Tokyo: A Day at Jindaiji Temple
We’ll meet at Musashi-Sakai Station’s south exit at 10:00AM. From there, I’ll drive us to Jindaiji Temple.
On the way, I’ll explain the basics of Japanese Buddhism and the temple’s long history.
At Jindaiji, we’ll get out of the car and stroll the quiet grounds and join a traditional *oharai* purification ritual. Inside the main hall, you’ll take part in and observe monks performing this ceremony, where sacred fire is still used—a rare tradition preserved over centuries.
You purchase a protective *ofuda* charm.
The purification ritual requires the purchase of “Ofuda”.
The cost of the “Ofuda” is already included in the participation fee.
Next, we’ll enjoy handmade soba noodles at a local restaurant with insights into the land, food, and history.
To end our journey, we’ll sit on a bench or Aquatic Botanical Garden.in a fancy street freshly prepared "Matcha"tea and a seasonal Nerikiri, a traditional Japanese sweet.

Jindai-ji Temple
We’ll meet at the south exit of Musashi-Sakai Station. From there, you’ll ride in my car, which I’ll park at near the temple. The tour will explain about the temple Jindaiji and Japanese Buddhist culture as you walk around the temple. At the temple, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a traditional purification ritual. You’ll enter the prayer hall and observe the monks performing the ceremony. If you’d like, you can select a protective charm (*Ofuda*) as a keepsake. (The charm is included in the tour fee.*) Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch together—Jindaiji’s famous soba noodles—while I share stories about the area’s natural beauty and rich history. We’ll sit on very quiet and qeacefu on the bench in front of Jindaiji Temple or adjacent Aquatic Botanical Garden) handmade Nerikiri will be served as dessert. It is a traditional Japanese confectionery. We go back to the station by car.

5.00Seeing the temple with a guide completely changed how it felt. Instead of using difficult or academic language, the explanations were connected to everyday life, so even someone like me, who didn’t grow up in Tokyo, could understand naturally. The purification ritual was very different from what I had experienced at my local temple. It was powerful and made me realize how many forms these rituals can take. After that, we were guided to a local soba restaurant. Eating soba while learning why soba culture developed in this area made the meal especially memorable. Transportation from the meeting point was also supported by car, which made the tour feel very safe and accessible, even for people unfamiliar with the area.

5.00What impressed me most was learning why the temple is located there and how the town developed, not just seeing an old temple. The explanations connected history, life, and food culture in a very approachable way. They also considered my dietary style when choosing a soba restaurant, which made me feel well cared for. I think this tour can be enjoyed comfortably by many people, including vegans and vegetarians, with advance consultation.

5.00Went on an incredible tour today to Jindaiji temple the second oldest in Tokyo. I can’t really explain how powerful the purification ceremony my adult son & I went to was. There’s no pictures allowed in there but 5 monks w/ big fire & a giant Takai drum, bells, giant metal ringing bowl, clapping and the most furious 15 minutes of deep loud chanting I’ve ever heard for us the let go of things that were ready to be cleansed of. Then we went to get soba noodles where you sit on floor at a low table. I was wearing a short dress so that was a trick! lol 😂 then we had homemade matcha & sweets in the forest afterward to process all that healing 🙂 However, by far, the most impressive and heart warming part of the day was Rei our guide & his wonderful driver Chie. They are artists & pure spirits w/ so much kindness & positive energy!! Rei was like a benevolent college professor making learning about Shinto & Buddhism in that area & all of Japan the most simple and interesting to understand!! Reid was raised gong to this temple w/ his grandfather & is a true & authentic person who has love for sharing this incredible place with people. We were going to go to Ghibli museum at first but chose this instead and IM SO GLAD! This was worth it <3
