Johnston Canyon

Discover the breathtaking splendor of Banff National Park's premier winter walk at Johnston Canyon! Upon arrival, your expert local guide will regale you with fascinating tales and trivia as you journey along the gentle road towards the Johnston Canyon falls trail. They will provide you with ice cleats/crampons and (optional) hiking poles for your journey to the frozen falls. This trek takes about 30 minutes, covering a distance of 1.2 km with an elevation gain of 50m. Upon reaching the Lower Falls, you can either return to the trailhead where a complimentary hot drink by a toasty firepit awaits or venture further to the Upper Falls, which adds another 30 minutes and 1.3 km to the trek. There, you'll be spellbound by the most magnificent frozen waterfalls in the canyon and can watch intrepid ice climbers navigate the icy cliffs. The complete round trip to the Upper Falls spans 2 hours, 5.0 km, with an elevation gain of 120m, suitable for those of average fitness.

Harry was a fabulous guide. He was very informative about the history, the geography and the flora and fauna of the area. He was happy to answer any questions and we had great conversations about all seasons in Banff. He had a bright and happy demeanour with a passion for Banff and the National park. The hike was easy and the frozen falls and sights on the way were absolutely stunning. A.winter wonderland must do.

We visited Johnson Canyon with Charlie as our guide. Charlie was extremely welcoming, personable and knowledgable both on the history of the area and geological features. The canyon was a stunning display, well worth the visit. Hot chocolate and bikkies was a lovely touch. I think the guide makes a difference in a guest's experience and Charlie most definately ticked that box of personal attention to ensuring we received a top experience and were comfortable. The Johnston Canyon tour was amazing! Our guide, Nolan, was the best. He shared so many amazing facts, paced the walk perfectly for our comfort and also for avoiding other groups, showed us the best vantage points for photos, and topped it off with s’mores and hot drinks at the end! The scenery was incredible, especially the frozen waterfalls. The included crampons made the walk so much safer and easier. Highly recommended!

Taylor was a great guide and our family had so much fun on the Johnston Canyon Walk. So helpful to have the crampons provided. The hot drinks at the end of the hike were also very welcome. Taylor was entertaining and informative and the hike was gorgeous in winter.

Taylor was a brilliant host. The whole tour was excellent with a walk to both the lower and upper falls which were breathtaking. The tour ended with delicious hot chocolate (or other hot drinks) and delicious smores 😋 can highly recommend

What a morning! Gini picked us up and took us to Johnson Canyon where we hiked both the lower and upper falls. She provided crampons, history of the area, and hot cocoa when we finished. The canyon half frozen was absolutely stunning and Gini was the best tour guide! Definitely fit this tour in if you can.

This was a fantastic trip! The van was spotless, large and comfortable and our guide Gini was very friendly and personable as well as being knowledgeable about the area in general, the Canyon, its wildlife and its history. We had plenty of stops to get photos and to just breathe in the beauty! The hot drinks at the end were the perfect wind-down. I would highly recommend!
